meaning "to wait" ???? iono my first guess....iono much bout it...guess hearing chotto matte(sp?) i thought something wait up or hold on or .... wait for me....something like that...imo...i could b stupidly wrong..:)

anotheryuifan - July 15, 2008 05:49 AM (GMT)
i think it means 'a little' and 'a short time'...just guessing too
like cyber-san's example chotto matte = wait a short time...which is wait a moment
....and the 'a little' is like...tsumaranaiyo (boring!) you answer with 'chotto'(a little)...so that means you think it is quite boring too...
note: ...might not be a good idea to take what i say seriously :sry ha..ha..

pandas who read this scare me - July 15, 2008 07:31 AM (GMT)
you can use chotto as a polite way to say no.

like anotheryuilover said it means a little or something like that so if someone asks you out you can go (jpanese equivalent of ummm) then chotto.

Well, 'chotto' means a little, but it can be used by itself to mean 'Wait', people can figure it out from the context.
So "Chotto matte kudasai" (or whatever way you want to conjugate it) is the long way of asking someone to wait.
Kind of like in english how you can say "Hold up for a second" which could be said easier as "Hold up".

But literally, 'chotto' means a little.
