Title: Questions bout Floyd Rose Bridges...

j.k - May 13, 2008 11:30 AM (GMT)
So my Ibanez comes with a Floyed Rose bridge and i have quite a few questions bout it...so, plz tell me if u guys know anything...

So I've been trying to tune my guitar from standard tuning to Drop-C since last week and i juz cant hit it...
It's like, whenever i loosen a string, the bridge drops backwards and all my other strings get tightened.Been trying to balance the bridge for quite long but i juz cant get it.
How do I actually tune to Drop-C with my bridge dropping and pulling my other strings??

Another one is about dive-bombing. can anyone tell me how to do it? I tried pulling the trem hard but it doesnt sound as sharp as in the songs. Was it becoz i wasnt pulling hard enough? i was scared the whole bridge would break if i pull too hard :sry Dive-bombing sounds really cool but i dun wanna break my bridge for doing it =O
Anyone mind telling me how to do it?

Thanks in advance to those that reply....

ooo, that's one thing not good bout floating bridge... the tremolo thingy always causes the strings to go out of tune.... sry i cant help anythin... hav to ask the pros.... :P

It won't go out of tune once the floyd rose bridge is locked.
But you will have a hard time tuning it.

Go to the Floyd Rose main website. They have steps telling you how to restring and tune it. But it's a long process i can assure you =.=

I was told with synchronised tremelo's you absolutely MUST NOT detune it and it will damage the bridge.

So you need to make sure all the strings go up or down together in pitch. I spoke with a guy in a music store and he said you can't drop D on a tremelo.

j.k - May 15, 2008 07:25 AM (GMT)
it's so troublesome >.< most of the songs i wanna play comes in drop-c tuning =O

@speedphantom : I tried drop-D b4, and it worked. I tuned it when i wanted to play Beat It by Fall Out Boys (Michael Jackson cover) and i actually managed to get it to Drop-D. In fact, my guitar is NOW in Drop-D tuning >.<

How about dive-bombs guys? how do you make those sharp "weeeeeeeeee~~" sound? I pulled the tremolo and it doesnt sound very sharp to me...

tsunvun86 - May 15, 2008 08:43 AM (GMT)
The key to the sharpness is artificial harmonics.

j.k - May 15, 2008 09:01 AM (GMT)
wooo!!! :clap
how do you do it?? teach me please.... :please :please :please

tsunvun86 - May 15, 2008 10:15 AM (GMT)
Ah it's hard to explain through typing.
You can look it up in youtube. Tons of videos showing you how to do these stuff. Including dive bombing.

j.k - May 16, 2008 05:03 PM (GMT)
i checked out youtube. I cant tell which video is pinch harmonic and which is artificial harmonic @@ there are vids that have "artificial harmonics" as title but ppl's comments says that it's pinch harmonic and some says pinch and artificial harmonic are the same things. @@

tsunvun86 - May 16, 2008 05:10 PM (GMT)
Well pinch harmonics is artificial harmonics, but artificial harmonics is not pinch harmonics.

It's like an apple is a fruit, but a fruit is not an apple.

j.k - May 16, 2008 05:37 PM (GMT)
o_O that's deep.

pinch harmonic = artificial harmonic ;
artificial harmonic =/= pinch harmonic

so i juz do pinch harmonics and i get the same thing as artificial harmonic?

This should give you an idea of what Pinch Harmonics is all about!

http://www.justinguitar.com/en/TE-012-PinchHarmonics.php

Overdrive/Distortion helps to make it more obvious I think.

Oh a very good site! Thanx benzwong~!! wooo

benzwong - May 17, 2008 03:25 AM (GMT)
Haha Stephen, thank justin instead, he's such a good teacher!

j.k - May 17, 2008 04:37 AM (GMT)
ooh, i get it now!

well, thanx to tsunvun and benz for the web.

i still cant do it right >.<

sometimes the sound will come ONLY if i'm lucky....

benzwong - May 17, 2008 06:08 AM (GMT)
Me too, not always haha..

But practice makes perfect!

tsunvun86 - May 17, 2008 07:52 AM (GMT)
His section about transcribing explains exactly what I usually do when I transcribe!
I was like hey I do that as well lol.

Yeah have a look at that section cuz like what he said transcrbing is important for yr guitar playing!!

@@ that looks VERY hard for me...

might take me years to learn it XD

I've got a friend who put her Strat in drop D and that has a two-point tremelo as well. The guy in the music store strongly recommended not to since it can damage it so its up to you I guess.

I personally wouldn't be risking it.

I don't quite understand how Drop-D can damage the bridge. Different string tension can damage the bridge?

Please do explain :please bcoz i dun wanna spoil my bridge....

EDIT:: i tuned my guitar back to standard tuning and it was damned hard.
altho i'm able to get the tuning back but i still cant get the bridge to float parallel with my guitar body...
i think i spoiled the string tension coz i left the guitar in drop-D tuning for like 3days...

EDIT again >.<'' :: so i got it back to drop-d and it's even easier than getting it to standard tuning. does this means i spoiled my bridge or wat?

speedphantom - May 19, 2008 02:42 AM (GMT)
I think its because the bridge is spring loaded and all the strings are meant to have the same tension otherwise it gets thrown out somehow and it might damage some parts.

Kinda like

_----- when its meant to be ------

I know its 100% true, I've heard it from several sources.

j.k - May 19, 2008 02:29 PM (GMT)
=O OMG but i really wanna learn this song badly but it's in drop-D =O

anyway i can prevent this??

benzwong - May 20, 2008 04:21 PM (GMT)
I'm not sure about your song, but some can be played by dropping the full step for all the strings (DGCFAD)?

Just make some adjustments to the fingering? haha..

speedphantom - May 21, 2008 12:50 AM (GMT)
The guy in the store said you can get your tremolo blocked so it only goes one way or just use another guitar I guess ><.

sirnanzy - June 10, 2008 02:18 AM (GMT)
what floyd rose is your Ibanez using and what model isit? because diff trem models reacts differently to divebombing and also tuning stability, considering that its an Ibanez could it be a LO-TRS?

JKDragoon - June 25, 2008 05:28 PM (GMT)
Argh... I absolutely HATE Floyd Rose Bridges!!! XD
I'm sure I've vented my distaste for the system somewhere on this forum before... XD

Anyhow, I've had some experience with doing different tunings for my old Ibanez guitar that had a Floyd Rose system.
Believe me, I've gone through tunings that were way off the map... BDDDDD to be exact.
The first time I tuned to this (and knew nothing about the system?)... *SNAP* and a neat string cut on my arm. 2nd time left a small wound on my finger.
Best thing to do when you're tuning DOWN is to loosen ALL the strings and then loosen the bridge slightly (so it goes up a little). From there, start balancing your strings up, as well as tightening the bridge as necessary. Eventually, you should be able to get to the tuning desired.
This is only my way of doing it... I'm not sure if it's entirely correct... But... uhh... It worked for me...
...
..
.
Till I retired the Ibanez... and the dratted Floyd Rose for good... XD

JK

P.S. On a side note, Floyd Rose Systems are known for the stability when dive-bombing due to the locking nuts on the head of the guitar... Don't be afraid to push those dives... But don't pull up too far! (And make sure the strings have been 'broken in')
