As 'celebration' for the end of my exams, I decided to translate this bit from PaTi PaTi May 08 issue. YUI goes through each of her song in I LOVED YESTERDAY and comments on them. I think it's interesting to learn more about how/why she did them the way she did! :good
Here's what I'm referring to. Scans thanks to

I LOVED YESTERDAY Self Liner Notes01 Laugh away
It is a song which has a spring feel to it, and makes you want to ride leisurely on a bicycle. As it was going to be used in a CM, I received several pictorial images of water droplets, the blue skies. Then I worked on bringing out that kind of image, composing an upbeat tune. I wanted to include a more 'breezy' feel to the song, hence during the production stages I added the sound of strings into the song.
02 My Generation
While it is strong, this song also has a refreshing feel to it. As such, I decided to place it at the second track in order to maintain a 'breezy' feeling. The strong message "as long as I possess mental preparation, I can be free at any time" which was contained within directly brings us straight into the song, hence I think it has a nice flow.
03 Find me
I thought of making a song which is catchy and easy to hum along. I also had a general image of the chorus, but when I was composing this song on my own, I couldn't fit any of these into a tune. (lol) "I think it should it should feel like this?" was the kind of thoughts which surfaced as I went along composing. After I finally materialized it into a song, I thought "Oh, that's right, this was how I wanted it to be like".
04 No way
Like RUIDO in the previous album, I wanted to insert a song which is able to change the mood of the album. Initially this was a full song, but making it only one chorus would be more impactful, plus it is a はっちゃけた song (someone please tell me what this means thank you) so I thought it would be better off shorter. Hence, I cut off this song halfway. I think it is a song which possesses a fast paced feeling. I think the situation which was described in the lyrics happens often to everyone, so when faced with such a situation, it would be great if this song plays in your head. (lol) Like "ahhh... no way!" or "I just can't continue on like this!" (lol) I hope this will also be not only applicable to love relationships, but to other relationships as well.
05 Namidairo
I think the rationale for placing 'Namidairo' after 'No way' was "the feeling of being so close yet in reality so far apart". In both of these cases, I think it is a feeling which doesn't change for everyone, no matter how old they become, and everyone definitely feels like that in these two situations. It seems a little strange though, how both of these songs exude the same feeling despite the tune being totally different.
06 Daydreamer
I happened to watch a particular show in which the female lead was a person who kept thinking "I always can't achieve anything, I'm so useless..." That girl said "Who I really want to be is OO's (someone's) hero". Then, she was told "Then why not just go ahead and try being one?" And she really became one. I can vividly recall that scene where I felt "This is awesome" and "She's really shining". That resolution to change one's feelings from "Can I change?" to "I can change myself" made me think of making this into a fast paced song.
07 Love is all
It is a song which seems to be a conversation, like "pasa pasa pasa" (sound of something clear cut) (lol). My feelings are naturally contained in this song, while the melody and the sound are gentle, so I think it gives a rather mysterious feeling. In the chorus, I tried a lowering of half a tone for each part gradually. I tried a lot of things indeed.
08 I will love you
As it's not "I love you" but "I will love you", it is something like "I will probably slowly begin to like you" kind of feeling which illustrates that there is still some distance... I wanted to express this fine distance. I wanted to bring out the feeling that although there is still some distance between us, "I want to get to know you bit by bit" and then "Slowly become closer". The sound of this song seems to link to and continue from the previous song, but the viewpoint of the song is entirely different.
09 We will go
I think this is a rather interesting song as the rhythm pattern changes as it goes along and there are also a lot of different sounds being projected. The melody is fast and has a lot of words in it, so I tried to articulate my words properly. (lol) The words really have a message to put across, so I tried my best to pronounce and sing them clearly. I wanted to make it a song which has a sort of "Let's go" kind of feeling, and also a type of song which is being able to push or motivate oneself. It seems to be like reiterating this to myself...
10 OH YEAH
This song has a feeling of morning. (Theme song for 'Mezanyu~') It was last to be created. Although I will feel sleepy at 4 am (lol) (airing time of program), I love the sunrise. Even if there are definitely times when I think like "Just by missing the train the day will seem to be unpleasant", I must chase after the train and put everything back in order. I do have times when I can get up right away in the morning, as well as times when I can't... By "It's a morning filled with hope" I wanted to attach a comical meaning to it. I want to move on smoothly every day. (lol)
11 My friend
I wrote this song wanting to make it contain the image of recalling something from the past, hence the acoustic based nostalgic sounding melody. As it was way too natural, one didn't realize, but when you think about it, "Ah, the person who was naturally by my side all along is someone who is very precious". When two people line up next to each other and look down at their shadows, though they will think "Ah, that resembles a couple", they were just by each other's side naturally" that kind of feeling. The last part "I will strive hard too" brings the picture back to the present. Because of the existence of "that time", there is the "present". It fits into the album title as well.
12 LOVE & TRUTH
I thought it would be refreshing to insert a song which had the sound of strings right after an acoustic song. This song contains the feelings of both of the females in the movie "Closed Note". There was this girl in the movie who kept playing truant, and the scene of that girl singing "Tsubasa wo kudasai" with all her heart left a deep impression on me. Whenever, I listen this song, I am reminded of that scene. That girl also made a firm decision that "I would go to school", so it has the advancing ahead kind of feeling... I included thoughts of "not wanting to lose out to this child, and moving on too" as well.
13 Am I wrong?
During a serious conversation, the other person's mobile phone rings, and when he picks up his mood and tone changes suddenly. At that time, one will think "This is strange" or "Wow"... It's like looking at another person. It's like viewing an entirely different person. While there is such objectivity, it is also a song filled with determination. "There's only one thing which I hold dear"; although I have something which I cannot give way, I have no intention of troubling you. Such were the thoughts which were present in the song. There are a lot of emotions in this song. It ends off at the point where "Why do I feel the way that I feel?" and "Is it wrong for me to feel like that?" I think it is a really strong song.
