Title: Squiers, Jasmines and no-names
Description: Do you really want a prestige guitar?

Different people have different reasons for selecting their guitars.

If you have the money for a showcase guitar of exotic woods or special bindings, markers, or other hardware, that's fine...I sure do like a fancy decked-out guitar. I just can't afford one.

If you have the money and want to buy a guitar as a collector item, like identicle Fenders to YUI's, that's cool, I have no problem with that. But again, I don't have the money to be buying guitars as collector items.

If you're doing cover material and want to sound exactly the same as the original, then that might be another reason to select the same guitar as your favorite artist. Personally, I'd rather not sound like somebody else, I want my own sound to the point that I would have a special unique guitar made just for me if I could afford it. But I can't right now.

Anyway, as YUI herself points out in this interview, just posted by gotchi and translated by uchihamel, the appearance of the guitar should really be secondary to the sound.

QUOTE
YUI: Hmm… For the acoustic, I think I’m rather picky/ particular about many things such as whether the sound is long-lasting etc.
Chris: So, as compared to the outlook (of the guitar), you are more particular about the sound?
YUI: For the outlook, I think simplicity is nice, but for the sound, I do want to be more particular about it.

I have seen a bunch of people almost apologetic of the guitars they are playing.....don't be! Remember that YUI didn't start on top shelf guitars, and her Martins are fairly recent aquisitions.

So you can't afford a Fender and have to buy a Squier? So what???

Look what this guy is doing with a Squier!!!

I've already asked, but I'm asking again....help this guy make it big.
Please read this thread.

Great thread, a guitar is a guitar. Regardless the quality, if you're a good player you can make it sound good! Sometimes the quality is so terrible it's unplayable, but I agree, don't be ashamed of lower end guitars, just show them off with a mad solo :good

yea, seriously.. and dear YUI has a very good point!

it really doesn't matter if you get the "#1 TOP BRAND GUITAR"... having it won't prove your ability to play... like kevin stated, if you're a collector though that's fine, but if the only reason why you're getting that top brand (and expensive) guitar is to think that it'll make you play well (or to show it off and make people believe that you're a big shot, that's a whole different thing.. :what

sure, it would be great to have a nice quality guitar to start off with, but really, it's your attitude and spirit alone that will make you excell in your guitaring skills...

also, a lot of people tend to underestimate Squier.. Squiers are actually quite nice for the amount of moola you spend for 'em..

Technically, Squier is by Fender, so it's still partially Fender. ;)

I started out with a Jasmine classical guitar about seven years ago. :)

I think the more important thing is taking one step at a time. The truth is most people tend to shy away from the guitar after a year or two. I've seen many of my friends push their guitars aside after buying a guitar the previous year.

This is why buying a basic/starter guitar is better than purchasing a brand-name / high quality guitar to start off.

Designed by Fender haha XD. But yeah I agree that people shouldn't apologise for getting entry level guitars. That's the whole point of entry level!!

So you don't spend a fortune of a top of the line instrument and not be any good at it and not able to appreciate what it is.

Mmm.. I wish I have a Fender strato as well....
But my Squier is doing it's job at the moment... so I'll just wait till I have cash to spare :P At least they're descendants of Fender hehe..
