YUIThe 4th year since moving to Tokyo! The 3rd album! 3rd time appearing on our program!
YUI, accepting the past and living today to the fullest to ensure no regrets!Chris: How long has it been since you came to Tokyo?
YUI: It is already the 4th year.
Chris: Have you gotten used to life here?
YUI: I think I have gradually become accustomed to it.
Chris: We’re currently right in the middle of April, and the sakura viewing season is already over. Did you go sakura viewing?
YUI: I did take a look at them while taking strolls. They were beautiful.
Chris: Do you like spring?
YUI: I like spring. But I do get a shock sometimes when it suddenly starts to rain. The weather turns cold and warm periodically.
Chris: That’s true. By the way, spring is the season where something new begins. When did you begin learning the guitar?
YUI: Around 15 to 16 years old.
Chris: So you’ve been playing for 5 years.
YUI: That’s right.
Chris: Did you learn the guitar on your own? Or was there a teacher?
YUI: I received guidance from the people around me who performed street lives, and also researched on my favorite chords and practiced them.
Chris: So this means that it was pretty much of independent learning?
YUI: I think so.
Chris: It seems that guitars are currently selling very well due to YUI’s influence. Have you thought of releasing a YUI model guitar?
YUI: A YUI model! That’ll be great.
Chris: Is the electric guitar better? Or you prefer the acoustic guitar?
YUI: Hmm… For the acoustic, I think I’m rather picky/ particular about many things such as whether the sound is long-lasting etc.
Chris: So, as compared to the look/design (of the guitar), you are more particular about the sound?
YUI: For the look/design, I think simplicity is nice, but for the sound, I do want to be more particular about it.
Chris: Alright, shall we have YUI-chan to leave a message for people who are going to start learning the guitar from now on as a result of your influence.
YUI: When I first begin learning the guitar, I too had trouble with chords like F and G, but the key is to slowly be able to sound them. I think it is also better to first attempt to play songs which you like. I think it would be good to repeatedly play songs which you like.
Chris: I see. Of the songs one likes, is it better to start out with simple songs, or challenge the more difficult ones?
YUI: If one is attempting a more difficult song, it would be better to first not bother about the rhythm, and work on “down picking” (strumming downwards only, probably like what she did with the little girl in that I LOVED YESTERDAY CM) only. That way should be better? Not rushing through, but slowly, one step at a time.
Chris: That’s brilliant!
YUI: Thank you.
Chris: What kind of meaning is contained in the title “I LOVED YESTERDAY”?
YUI: Well, it is a message that in order to be able to love yesterday, one should live today to the fullest. It is a message of accepting the past, as well as to live the present to the maximum to ensure no regrets, which was included in this title.
Chris: That’s really positive. Also, in the song “Love is all”, YUI-chan was rather worked up right?
YUI: That’s right. As thoughts of during interviews, when there were people who did not really listen to my songs properly beforehand came to my mind, I thought “I hope that you could just pay a little more attention to my songs”. And that resulted in this song. As the title says “Love is all”, it implies that “Love is everything”. It also contains feelings that all my heart and soul have been put into creating the song.
Chris: What was interesting was the line about how it is easy to read a letter, but difficult to write one. It’s like “do understand the labor and effort behind it”.
YUI: I think there are many people who will read it repeatedly, and there are many ways of acceptance.
Chris: Well, the process of creation is not an easy feat. There’s a lot of struggles right?
YUI: Yup.
Chris: This is a rather interesting song indeed.
YUI: Thank you.
Chris: When writing lyrics, do you use a computer or is it handwritten?
YUI: I carry a notebook with me all the time, so I write in that notebook.
Chris: In what sort of circumstances do you get ideas for song writing?
YUI: I think I am always subconsciously thinking of it. Like when I listen to various songs, hear various lyrics and then receive a sort of inspiration from them. I think there are really a lot of different kinds of circumstances, but what strikes me deeply was when I was drying the laundry. The thoughts just sort of came to my mind mysteriously. But I thought alright I shall start writing songs after I finish drying the laundry, so better hurry up and dry it.
Chris: When doing such simple chores, one becomes clearer isn’t it.
YUI: That’s true. In fact one could be concentrating.
Program routine: Pin-pon box- Number 18. If you go to the karaoke, what would you sing?
YUI: I don’t really go to the karaoke, but the song which I play on the guitar and sing often would be “Time after time”.
Chris: I see. So you like Cyndi Lauper?
YUI: Yup I like her.
Chris: Although you’re a professional musician, do you sing outside of your job? Like relieving stress for example.
YUI: When I’m with familiar people or close friends I do sing as per normal. Like “Stand by me”.
Chris: In that kind of situation you do a cover?
YUI: Doing covers really does make me excited.
Chris: A lot of western songs?
YUI: I did a lot of covers for western songs, and I remember a lot of western songs.
- When did you recently cry?
YUI: Cried? Did I cry…? I cried…?
Chris: YUI-chan doesn’t cry often right? You seem strong.
YUI: Yeah I don’t really cry. That’s right. Oh yeah, recently, “
Whisper of the heart”… Do you know of “Whisper of the heart”? It’s a Ghibli anime, and I love it a lot, and my heart will go all soft. When I watch that, I just become very touched.
Chris: I see, this means you like Miyazaki’s anime?
YUI: Yup. I love it a lot.
YUI’s nationwide tour starts from May! Please check her official website for latest news!
