Well a lead probably plays mostly the solo riffs. So learning those would be a good start I guess. Using YUI's Rolling Star as example, look for the Band Score (not just the guitar score, the ones that has other instrument parts) and it should have the lead guitar part. You can learn how to play it by the book at first. And once you are experienced enough, you can add your own style with some sliding, hammering, bending, etc.

By lead I guess he means solos directly.

Well you can start by practicing scales. Practice alternate picking, Start from lower speed and when u're comfortable increase speed.

Get some easier solos from songs n practice them.

just like everyone else said: solos, scales, slides, hammers, bends and everything else

make sure you add some of your own attitude to your music when you're playing lead! everybody likes a lead that knows what their doing and uses their own attitude to make things sound better

Practice riffs, it's those things where 3-4 notes repeat themselves realli fast and sound ultra cool (but are ridiculously simple) ^^ add them somewhere in a song and yu sound like a pro haha!

of course solos are important too. and to get yur solos right, get yur scales right first.

and if yu're playing lead yu shud get used to knowing when to come in during a song.

and most importantly, put yur soul into it ^^
