Title: Kanji for Japanese Names

Helixius - March 5, 2008 11:06 AM (GMT)
Anyone knows a good website to look for kanji of japanese names?
Like for example if I want to know how to write Hijikita in kanji...
Sometimes the japanese input text or microsoft word cannot give the correct kanji for rare names.

otherwise rikaichan has a names dictionary which could come in handy. :)

if you're not familiar with rikaichan, it's a really good Japanese dictionary extension for Firefox. if you ever browse any Japanese sites, just enable rikaichan and you'll get the translation of the words in a popup if you hover over them.
there's also an input box where you can write stuff in both english (or whatever other language you've got) and Japanese and get the translation.
to use the names dictionary, simply push enter one more time to get the results from the names dictionary. :)

this might be a hassle if you're just going to check one name, but i really recommend it to anyone that often browse Japanese sites or do online translating and such.

@vivi: Thanks! That site seems to have a very complete list!! although it's limited to surnames.

@mangomalte: I do have rikaichan installed on my firefox, but without the name dictionary lol. Maybe I should try later. Thanks. But where's the input box? Is there such a thing?

^ in the Tools menu you can either choose to enable Rikaichan or you can choose the Rikaichan Look-up bar. there will appear a bar over the website tabs with an input box which you can use for translation whatever you want. :)
