Title: Work experience
Description: what did you do?
cherii - February 22, 2008 11:44 AM (GMT)
Well..I'm finally in Year 10 this year. I've always been looking forward to doing some form of work, but now that I can, I don't know what to do. My family hasn't ever opposed me doing anything in music, which I really want to do, but my mum might just end up chucking me in nursing and teaching. I don't mind doing them for work experience, but I really don't see myself doing either in the future.
Shouldn't you do work experience in something you're interested in? I'm going to have to visit my Careers Adviser on Monday...maybe she has contacts. :) I realised that nothing could make me happier than working with music, my passion. (haha every YLs passion is music, right?)
So, what did everyone do for work experience?

wow, i envy you brad, i wish i could fly too. i'm still a student, but i'm planning to study psychology, i don't know why but i like that subject. i always wanna be a fighter pilot, but my country's planes isn't exactly up to date, but it's still good. so all i can do is beat every enemy playing ace combat.
but i wanna become the best at what i'll do in the future because next year i'm going to college. wish me luck guys, i've got tests coming up soon. :sry
P.S. Brad, if you take natchi to Japan, please take me too. hehehe....

wow chief you really sound like a 'chief' now!
well I'm a Nursing student cherii-san. and the 'on-job training' in the hospital is really hell... well I shouldn't have said that since I've chosen this degree. I really like the field of medicine so I took it. but I was never prepared for this kind of blow to me. now I'm really choking.
I've been thinking I should've chosen a degree on music but looking back, I think I was too blinded by my childhood dream that's why I haven't had the chance to weigh music with nursing.
BAH
my point here cherii-san is you must choose what you really want and choose CAREFULLY. I chose what I wanted but I wasn't careful so now I'm having doubts and experiencing hard times.
if it's music then music should it be. then I'd be really envious of you! argh!
but I'll be here rooting for you.

Work experience !? Uugh.. I've done a lot of things that have nothing to do with my future jobs.. Well.. I already have a job right now.. uh, well.. i'm gonna share some of my job experiences..
- Babysitting
- Home Tutoring
- Freelance Designer
- Store Keeper
- PC Maintenance/Service
- Transporter ? (Ugh.. dunno what's the right term for this..)
..
I think that's it..
EDIT: added more jobs.. :sry
Orange Toast - February 23, 2008 07:02 PM (GMT)
Since your only in yr.10 you shouldn't really worry too much about getting work experience in music. Anyways here's my work experience:
Yr.10 - Summer camp counselor @ Ontario Science Centre
Yr.11 - Florist
Yr.12 - Upholsterer for Toyota
1st yr Uni - Custom's Inspector @ Airport
2st yr Uni - Casino courtroom banker
none of which are related to my major...mechanical engineering.
cherii - February 23, 2008 08:16 PM (GMT)
Well, when I went to the city yesterday, we went to so many places I'd want to do work experience in. I wasn't thinking about MUSIC music, like fully recording and stuff, but I'm thinking of going to this really cool music shop that I went to about a month ago.
I'm just really waiting for Monday to find somewhere I could try. =\ We're allowed to do two weeks each year, so we can do 2 work experiences. I'll think about if I'm okay with nursing, since it'll make me mum happy..

cause you will look so damn funny in that uniform chief!!! oh wait, is it funny? well maybe it is, because I'm imagining you doing crazy stuff on air! like shouting YUI-san's name and declaring your love for her there! or even crazier things! hahaha! =P
hey cherii, if you'll try nursing then the only thing I could tell you is be prepared for whatever will happen. you'll never know what will hit you when you start to study it. it still depends how your program there teaches you that course. here in our place it is so damn high-standard and I'm at a constant pressure. like all the holes in my body will spurt out blood anytime. EVERYTIME.
GANBATTE NE!
gotchi - February 24, 2008 12:39 AM (GMT)
yea bah i haven't had much work experience in what i'm studying yet but i do hope to apply soon with the help of my university co-op program...
i've worked 4-6 years in the summer camps working with children and teachers. i enjoyed it! but it has like nothing to do with what i'm studying (Media Arts & Interaction Design)...
and i've worked as a sales associate at the airport in those gift shops and i hated it...
i think trying out different jobs is great so just go out there and start! once u get the real experience you might be able to find out what u want or find oout what u want to avoid.... i did not enjoy doing sales work at all...
shinji_tono - February 24, 2008 01:08 AM (GMT)
^ yep I agree to gotchi's suggestion. trying different jobs is the right thing to do. in that way you explore different job opportunities outside and you'll be able to determine the jobs that you like and those that you'd most likely won't do after you've graduated because they doesn't suit you or your taste.
so it'll be a good experience cherii! try as many as you can and explore and discover! :good
(i'll be totally envious of you because I never had the chance to do those things. damn school.)

i worked in a primary school it was hard work. I abosulutely wouldn't advise you working with under 10's with all the health and safety rubbish.
however it was quite rewarding and i gues it was fun so if you like kids try teaching. If you are tall a tip is to crouch and not bend over it hurts your back. im 5'8or9 not that tall but damn did it hurt.
gotchi - February 24, 2008 01:36 AM (GMT)
^^ i know! the kids really drain the energy outta you..but it's sooo rewarding! some of them are SO ADORABLE and they make me things..
this boy made a card for me and the mom came up to me and asked if i was Georgina (my name) and then i said "Yes i am Georgina"...and the mother was like "ooh! my son was making a card and asked how to spell it and i thought he was making a card for me because my name is Georgina as well! but he was making it for you! ......" .....it was kinda embarrasing for her LOL but i guess if i was the son i'd make a card saying "i love you mom" instead of ur mom's first name...
they do the darnest things...i love giving piggy backs to them and running around playing tag...or making stories with them and art work.....their imaginations are so open and not restricted...
depyon - February 24, 2008 01:56 AM (GMT)
I have little work experience; and the experience came from a part-time job.
Well, to be exact, I had some 'job' experience (I guess you can call it so) in the army (national service). I was an Artillery officer, and 'worked' in a brigade headquarters. So I was doing lots of administrative work, and the environment was less a military one than an office one.
I worked/ am still working at a Japanese book cafe/ restaurant. Well, I enjoy it a lot cuz I get to interact with Japanese customers everytime I work. And I did learn a lot about Japanese cuisines/ the culture of Japanese food, and learnt how to deal/ talk to Japanese customers!
But honestly, I wouldn't see myself doing this as a permanent job. It's not really my cup of tea.
As for you, since you're looking for a job (for the rest of your life), the advice would be to look for something that's of your interest. To some people, pay might be of concern or even priority, but if you can't enjoy your work, you can't enjoy your life.
Woah we have a pilot here. It's really cool! I don't know what 'I wanna be' in future actually! Hmm...... it's time to think abt it~
pandas who read this scare me - February 24, 2008 01:57 AM (GMT)
lucky :what health and safety regulations
the teachers didnt allow me to pick them up.
they all try and get your attention. Im sick of kids already. Im not a mean person i would look after them once in a while but being in the profession for 20years would kill me. Thats why all old teachers are seen as mean. I can relate they moan about the same things, over and over again.
Kids are the most evil beings, think about it they cant be as cute as they seem. Things are never that simple.

Mine:
Secondary school:
Waitress in a Japanese restaurant - Learn to say thank you to all the people who serviced you in some way. I felt uplifted when someone thanked me.
Office Clerk, once in purchasing department once in store department - Tedious job, but you get to know how the office environment is. How to use fax machine, answer calls, all these stuff.
University:
Promoters in exhibition - To me it was hard, approaching strangers and convince them to buy your products. Learned a lot as well, especially when I was observing how my superiors persuade people to buy *salute*
Data entry - Good pay, again tedious. I like my current Japanese boss though, and observing office politics XD
I'm afraid of children, dare not apply for teaching position >.<
Mine are normal part time jobs lol, but I'm sure you can learn something in every future job you have, happy working~

YES i agree. I've had many pleasant encounters (a few unpleasant ones though) with Japanese customers too! And several which were rather comical, thinking about it now.
Ah OFFICE POLITICS. I've had lots of them in the army. It was really terrible to work there. Any form of initiative was not welcomed, and we basically couldn't do anything on our own. Backstabbing was something I experienced for the first time then too. Bad experience. Thank goodness it was over.

pinku: *hi five* let's see who gets famous first!!! XD
i dunno. most of the time i tell myself "This is what I want to do. If I'm going to have a job, I want to do something related to music" and then other times i think that it's too unrealistic for it come true one day.
music will be my first choice. if i completely fail, then i should have a backup. i just have to find out what that backup will be..
br4d137 - February 25, 2008 05:24 PM (GMT)

I would be more inclined to recommend a part time job at somewhere like Allan's Music or another guitar shop of some description..
I wouldn't recommend a CD shop because they listen to crappy music all day.. They are also required to upsell useless stuff..

haha! that was fun! well I know too when we hold school teachings to gradeschoolers and do home visits when I'm on duty (duty is like the on-the-job-training we have here in Nursing). kids do really get hilarious at times but unruly too! I love the way we'd play all together and playing tag or they'll all go against me and wrestle me to death (poor me!). those simple things make me so darn happy. and at the end of the day my heart swells with joy from what I experienced.
but God does my WHOLE body hurts... :what
well chief! you're onto selling almost anything there! shall I call you the 'GREAT SALESMAN' already? and I've thought chief really suits you and for your aviation studies!
depy nii-san, well backstabbing is such a cruel thing to experience and I'd never thought someone would do such a thing to you. wel I guess I'm still not that open-eyed at reality. but I'm pretty much used to that here. they just fly like curses here (like jinxes do in Harry Potter when members of the Order encounter the Death Eaters). that's why you could relate so much to me nii-san. I just thought you understand my situation. never knowing that you yourself have experienced that. *hugs*
cherii-san. as chief said, GET YOUR LAZY BUM OFF THAT CHAIR! (well he started it LOL)
but if you really aim for Music occupations. ah well I'm not discouraging you. but I've also went through that. decision-wise, Music will not be a good choice if it'll be the primary source of your future. there may not be that many good, let alone, JOBS itself to support you. the situation is worse here than there I guess.
but you can't be truly happy with something your heart's not into, desho?
I'll share you what I'm planning to do. lately I just knew that Music is what I really want even though it was my dream to take up a medical related course, and I've landed in Nursing, and I thought that was about it but no. it was only now that I've listened to my heart well enough to hear it saying it's not Nursing that it is into but Music. so since I'm already in my 3rd year and going to 4th year, a year left to go, I shall finish this course first. what are all the hardships I've undergone into for? so when I finish this course I'll study Music. get a major or even a degree for it. and in this way, I could sustain myself and my studies. and after I've finished Music, that's the time for me to know if I'm going to make it into Music. if not, there's still something waiting for me. unlike if I chose Music first, finished it, then failed afterwards, my life going to who knows where, with this plan rest assured I have something on my back to back me up whatever happens.
but I still can't be 100% sure desho?
all is a gamble and it is up to you to take the risk and succeed.
so, DO IT CHERII! WE'RE ROOTING FOR YA HERE! :good

Okay...well I've searched online for some relatively close (up to the city) music/guitar shops...I'm starting to think that work experience in music will be unlikely. 3 shops have already emailed saying they don't accept any, or are full.
Haha. I could go back and ask if they accept part-time work. XD I think I'd get fired from just looking at the guitars everyday. Hehe. I'd be so tempted to just pick one up and start jamming. That's what they get for displaying REAL guitars.
Well, if all else fails...I have nursing to fall back on. Hmm...so yeah, it's all good..I guess.
