Title: noob question!

momentum - February 4, 2008 12:12 PM (GMT)
hi, asking about guitar chords lol. this is a noob question, so
what does f#m7 mean? or something like that. thanks

i used to wonder that too. haha.

ok lets see if i can explain step by step

F# stands for the chord F sharp of course, which is like this

e --2--
B --2--
G --3--
D --4--
A --4--
E --2--

F#m means F sharp MINOR, which is just a variation of F#, except it sounds gloomier, like this

e --2--
B --2--
G --2--
D --4--
A --4--
E --2--

now F#m7 is tricky, from what i understand the "7" at the end means that a note is shifted down. can't really explain this properly ><
if u hear this, it'll sound like a "bare-bones" version of F#m

e --2--
B --2--
G --2--
D -(2)- <-- the "4" is shifted down to 2
A --4--
E --2--

anyone can elaborate on the "7"? i'm interested in the actual explanation for it too lol

The 7th means that the changed note from the minor chord is the 7th note in the F#m scale flattened to go down one semi-tone.

Try that.

Everything starts from the scale of a particular chord. By scale, it mean do-re-mi-fa-so-yada-yada-type-of-stuff.

Usually a chord consist of 3 notes. And for Majors and Minors, it would be the Root, 3rd and 5th note that makes up the chord. So do would be the 1st note(which is the root), re would be second , so on n so forth.

Now when a chords is said to be a seventh chord or dominant seven, it means to have that usually 3 notes root-3rd-5th with an extra 7-flat... now the flat means half step lower than the note of the major scale.... So a 7-flat would mean the note half step lower of the seventh note of the major scale..... I think this is getting confusing lol.

Remember it's 7-flat only if u see it from themajor scale. If you see it from the minor scale, you just take the 7th note.

Example:
F#m7 would consist of Root-3rd-5th-7th of the F#m scale.

F#7 would consist of Root-3rd-5th-7thflat of the F# scale.

phew.......
