Guitar with flower flower, different holes, alot of zeros in it! XD

So whats the different between a normal acoustic...?

tsunvun86 - December 27, 2007 06:47 PM (GMT)
It can produce an acoustic sound, at the same time it can be plugged in into an amp as well.

So it's semi or half acoustic half electric.

ok.. can u tell me about the flowery acoustic? :X

I really cant tell whats the different with it..

nataliejwong - December 27, 2007 07:56 PM (GMT)
Flowery guitar... haha.

Those zeros are mini sound holes. Unlike the regular acoustic with just one sound hole, Ovation makes a few more holes at the top left and right sides of the guitar. They SAY that it produced a more balance sound/tone when there are more holes. Personally, I think it's just the same as a regular guitar.

The guitars in the picture are acoustics with pre-amps (aka. acoustic/electric guitar) but half of it is made out of lycrachord (plastic). Ovations come in different depth sizes (Super Shallow, Mid-Depth, Deep Bowl, Contour Bowl). The depth size will determine how much tone your Ovation will produce when you strum it. I used to have an Ovation (CS-257) for 6 years. The CS-257 is super shallow depth, so it didn't really have much tone to it, but with a Deep Bowl, it will have more of a bassier and deep tone when it's strummed.

Most traditional guitarists dislike Ovation because the company makes their guitars with 1/2 lycrachord plastic, and they say it doesn't sound as great as solid-body acoustic, which is true (based on my own personal experience). But it doesn't mean that Ovation guitars are cheap and crappy. They still sound decent, and their guitar body shape is real comfortable and playability and durability is great. In fact, Ovation are great for weather changes, since they only use the top piece as wood, the guitar is less prone to humidity changes if it gets too hot or cold.

However, a traditional acoustic guitar can also be an acoustic/electric if it has a pre-amp installed on the side of the guitar. For example, the guitar below is an acoustic/electric. See the pre-amp?

Actually you shouldn't confuse electric acoustic with semi acoustic

Electric acoustic is in fact just an acoustic guitar but with a built in pick-up.
Why a built in pick up? Well if you play on stage you can plug in your acoustic into an amp in order to have more volume. Sounds still the same, so the pick up is in fact like a built in mic for the acoustic.

Semi acoustic (or hollow body) is in fact an electric guitar but with a hollow body instead of a solid body. Stratocaster, Les Paul are solid body guitars.
The 6120 and ES-335 are hollow body guitars. (in fact the ES-355 is semi-hollow body, cause it isn't entirely hollow. But anyway don't wanna get too confusing)
These semi acoustic guitars are also supposed to be played amplified (like a normal electric guitar should)
But the difference is: A hollow body adds an extra amplified sound to the guitar not obtainble with a solid body guitar. (from wiki)

For more on this go to our best friend wiki:
Semi-acoustic/hollowbody electric wiki link

As with music styles:
I think the Gibson ES-335 type of guitar are best/most used for Jazz and Blues.

As in modern rock, I mostly see them in bands use for rhythm guitar.

Hey they are not weird! They are cool!!. I never played one before though, as I'm also still a noob :P
The Ovation however.......
It does look okay from the front, but the back is just...........

You guys speak a lot of words. (esp nat :P) These words confuse cherii.

I think for my next guitar, I'll get an electric. My siblings were telling me to get an electric, but it's not like they can blast that thing and make it sound good. I'm not letting them touch my guitars. Hehe. >_> They want to learn though, but I don't want them to learn. I want guitars to be MY thing in my family. r(-__-)r

yukio - December 28, 2007 03:36 AM (GMT)
yea semi-acoustics or hollowbodies shouldn't be confused with electro acoustics. hollowbodies are electrics with a hollow body. most sound pretty much like a normal electric with a diff tonal quality if u play it clean. my fave hollowbody would be the PRS Hollowbodies which look sick, sounds sick etc. u can get it to sound lalmost like an acoustic guitar with the right settings, piezo pick up etc. but yea its pretty much used as an electric guitar, with the addition of more acousticky sounds/tones

DJAffinity - December 28, 2007 04:32 AM (GMT)
So semi electric is some acoustic but will produce more type of electric sound then acoustic right? @@

Gosh, They musta cost a bomb huh? I've tried one before in my church, yea. kinda good, and can feel a lil hollow-ish in the tone.. :X

Gosh, how much do they cost in singapore.. ** wishing its not too expensive **

No exactly ... a semi electric means that it's an acoustic-like built guitar that has electric guitar components inside. Do produce electric sound, you still need to connect the guitar to an amplifier.

accoustic electrics probably go for around $100+SGD - $200+SGD more than the normal accoustic guitars (unless u're going for the higher end ones), which is probably to compensate for the pickups and electronic stuff inside

and semi-accoustics by famous brands like Gibson can cost thousands (probably even more than a les paul)

blues/jazz players love them =)

nataliejwong - December 28, 2007 02:37 PM (GMT)
I don't know much about electrics, but do the hollowbodies always come with those 'f' holes?

I guess the semi-acoustics should just be called 'hollowbody' acoustic. It won't get confused with acoustic-electric guitars. Then I again, I usually just refer to ac/el as 'acoustic with a pre-amp'.

Depends which Ovation model you're going to buy. asuna mentioned that Ovations cost $100 to $200 SG more than traditional acoustic guitars.

There are higher ups Ovations called 'Adamas' which uses higher quality material called 'Fibronic Soundboard' to construct the guitars. To read more about it, click here.

We already have a thread on weird-looking guitars.

This thread should be called "Semi-acoustic vs. acoustic/electrics?"

Shifty - December 29, 2007 06:01 PM (GMT)
Actually acoustic/electrics are more oftenly called Electric Acoustic rather than acoustic electric. But different people use different terms of it. But I think Electric acoustic makes more sense, cause it's an acoustic but with pickup(electric). Thus, an Electric Acoustic.

Okay this is getting Confusing @@

By the way, I think Asuna meant that Acoustic with built-in pickup are $100,$200 more than normal Acoustic without built-in pickup.
So like the exact same type acoustic, but one cost more because of the electronic.

@DJAffinity, do you want to buy an Ovation then? There are in fact low budget imitations out there. (Ofcourse they are not as good as the real thing)
