i was done by some comedian in japan, and you say it when you r in trouble but seriously dont get it (i think thats wat they said).

can someone clarify it to me wot does it actually mean, and when should it be used?

The word root is supposed to be "dore dake"(how long, how much) as in "Dore dake ... nan da yo!".(How long is this...?! How much did you...?!)

You use it as a stand-alone expression when you're surprised about the amount or the extent of something. You can practically use it with everything that's so extreme it surprised you. A simpler translation would be "What the F***?!", which is of course not a correct translation, but it hits the nail on the head imo.

Word has it that this expression came from the Japanese homosexual scene, but now it doesn't matter anymore anyway because almost everyone's using it. Comedians, actors in jdoramas, heck, even Tamori-san (the showmaster of MusicStation) is using it. どんだけ~?

ok thanks its much clearer but seriously why is everyone doing it? imagine shouting WTF!!!?!??!!!! in public. I know its not the exactly same but you would look like a idiot if you did it on the streets.

thanks Taiki

It is because it is not as coarse as "WTF". Most of the time, it is use as "Who do you think you are ?!" equivalent.
