Title: Tuning Help
hanguknamja - October 8, 2007 02:23 AM (GMT)
Im trying to play Name by the Goo Goo Dolls and the tuning is D A D A A E
My problem is that when i play some the strings they dont sound like they should.
Especially the 1st D.
I've played this song before but for some reason now my strings are sounding weird.
Im almost sure that my strings are tuned right. The tuner says that i've got the right notes.
Please Help!!
Also here is the site where i got the tabs.

I'm not familiar with the song, but here are a couple of suggestions or questions you might need to answer before anyone could possibly provide further help for you.
Did you recently change your strings? If so, perhaps the strings are going out of tune relatively quickly, especially if you haven't stretched the strings after changing them.
Or perhaps your strings are too old, and thus it might be time for you to change them for a fresh pair. Old strings could also make your guitar sound like it is out of tune.
There's also the matter of whether or not your guitar is properly intonated. I'm a bit lazy to explain how you go about checking for intonation, but you could probably google or Youtube it. Or someone else will eventually fill you in.
Finally, the accuracy of your tuner should probably be taken with a grain of salt. They are tools that provide you with a point of reference to how each of your strings SHOULD sound - thus if you aren't using your ears to make the fine adjustments to your tuning, I suggest you do so. Anyways, these are probably the basics of what you might be up against. Anything more would probably require you to take your guitar in to a shop and receive a setup.

If your guitar was at the standard tuning (EADGBE), it is relatively easy to drop the tuning to DADAAE. You don't need to change the 1st, 4th and 5th strings already. And you already have the A and D string as reference.
If I were to tune it, I would start by dropping the low E slowly. Pluck the 4th string (D), then quickly pluck the 6th string and start turning the tunner of the 6th string to release the string's tension. Keep turning it slowly, re-pluck both strings if you need to, and soon you will hear both string ringing a matching tone of D.
After you think you've got the 6th string tuned to D, you can check by plucking this 6th string while holding down a finger on the 7th fret, which should be an A note that matches the 5th string.
You can do the same for the 3rd string (G) [tighten the string to raise to A] and for the 2nd string ( B ) [loosen the string to lower to A]. Remember which direction tightens and loosens the string so you don't get confused, over tune, and perhaps even tighten too much and snapping the strings.

I should've been the first to reply to this thread, right?
Apologies... It was my net problems!!
I've not actually played that song, but I'm used to John Rzeznik's crazy tunings.
If you've managed to tune it to those notes, good for you!!
:clap
Is the tuner attached via a cable to your guitar or are you using it's in-built microphone? The in-built one might mess around with your tunings.
Also, I tend to tune my guitar a little sharp... The strings settle down after a while to the right notes (just a LITTLE sharp, i.e. the needle slightly going over green!)
Cross builds on a good point about your strings... Are they new? If so, make sure you stretch them out nicely at EADGBe tuning by bending the strings as far as they will go.
Another things could be the bow of your guitars neck or intonation. Adjusting these yourself are probably not advisable... But you can find sites that teach you how!
:good Good Luck

the tuner is built into my guitar. I've got it tuned to the right notes but like when i play the thick E string (now a D) on the 6th fret it sounds weird.
I tuned it right a few months ago and im doing the exact same thing now.

Well .. the 6 fret on the D string is only a G# (aka Ab). Perhaps you are thinking that the 6th fret is the A note and should match the 5th string A, which is not the case. It should be the 7th fret that is the A note.

Nah... hanguknamja's got the score in front of him (I hope)...
My guess would probably go to the intonation/bow of your neck...
Have you done a harmonics test for the tuning (i.e. YUI's test during "Taiyou no Uta") by fretting harmonics on the 12th Fret (Actually directly ON the metal part and then lifting your finger RIGHT after you fret the note)? If you don't know what I mean, ignore this method... XD
Perhaps tuning the top string slightly sharper might change things... XD
Also, you said you've tried this 'before'... Where do you live and when did you try it? Weather and change of seasons can severely affect a guitar's neck bow, esp. if you live near the sea where it is REALLY humid...
