Windows has a system restore program you should probably give it a try. I've never used it before, so im not 100% sure what it exactly "restores". There are also lots of programs online that you can download for data recovery.
br4d137 - October 7, 2007 03:48 AM (GMT)
no... system restore only recovers minor stuff...
not if u format a drive... :cry...
im looking online for other data restores...

Scavenger from download.com<--------
town_el - October 7, 2007 07:08 AM (GMT)
WHAT ?? YOU LOST ALL YUI's STUFF TOO ?
I don't think any program could help you to restore your lost files..
If only you lost it because you accidentally delete it, maybe..
But Formatted ?! Ouch !!
.. R.I.P
*runs to hardware store to buy new HD*
asuna - October 7, 2007 07:10 AM (GMT)
ouch man... i feel for u =O
if downloaded software can't do the trick, send the hard drive to a data recovery company and let the guys work their magic... not going to be cheap though

OMG!!! Brad...silly.
That's scary. Glad that you could restore your stuffs. ^_^
amane_kaoru - October 7, 2007 05:54 PM (GMT)
Brad...the getdataback software is usefull. it may help you out...
in the theory, a hardisk got 3 layers. mostly, ppl only can see the files in the 1st layer which is visible. once the file have been deleted, it would be in the 2nd layer of the cluster and of the 2nd layer are full, the files will automatically moved to the 3rd layer.
here's the point : once the file moved to the 3rd layer, it's a bye bye. the files can retrieve back if it's still in the 2nd layer. so, no matter formated or delete files also can be retrieve back. if you need my help, just let me know. i'll think of something.
if the file is in the 3rd layer cluster, it can still be retrieve but only with the file restoration company or the Police forensic. only these ppl have the proper tools for iot.
all i can say is, DONT WORRY, your files is still there if your hardisk cluster is large.
yukio - October 7, 2007 06:17 PM (GMT)
OH MAN i hate that when it happens.... but thank God you found a way.... oh man i would like die right there if it happened to me haha. i guess u can celebrate that u were able to get it back haha
Samart - October 7, 2007 07:16 PM (GMT)
I just can help you for the complete Beatles discography. Hope you recovered most of your files, if not all of them.
br4d137 - October 8, 2007 12:40 AM (GMT)
sigh im glad i got everything back i was about to punch myself in the nuts if i couldnt restore my drive
I guess thats what i get for getting a drive with the same name and size as my old one
But i got everything settled
2x 300 gig and a 500 gig internal drive with vista ultimate edition im a happy camper
s0l1dsn8k3 - October 8, 2007 05:52 AM (GMT)
amane, I'm don't think the "3 layers" thing is the correct terminology for explaining the harddisk, but it can certainly used as an analogy for explaining it to non-techie person.
Good stuff Brad. All is not lost. After recovery, you should go through the files (open them, play them, watch them, listen to them) and make sure the recovery process did make a full recovery of the files. Sometimes, they may be able to retrieve the filenames and size, but the actual link to the file may still be broken, rendering the file useless and unplayable.
amane_kaoru - October 8, 2007 07:43 AM (GMT)
i just used a simple theory to explain... it would get complicated if i used the techie words.
well, snake is correct. sometimes the files may be crashed, damaged or corrupted and it's unplayable. but, normally those things wont happen unless the file is removed during processing.
town_el - October 8, 2007 01:43 PM (GMT)
Eh ? It works ?
CONGRATS BRO ! So finally you got your YUI stuff back ?
But I thought that kind of software can't restore video files..
br4d137 - October 8, 2007 01:57 PM (GMT)
yeah... i went through most of them...
they all seem to work..
its okay about explaining the "layers" of a hard drive..
all i needed to know is if i could save it with a program...
and the answer was yes.. so im happy...
*simply_kawaii* - October 8, 2007 03:21 PM (GMT)
woah..i'm happy for you too, br4d137..

glad to hear u got your stuff back brad!
on the other hand... i hope no one ever retrieves my deleted p*** collection! :shock =O :sayw
edit: just kidding :la@
yupeh - October 10, 2007 02:06 AM (GMT)
ill try working on my lost yui files too.. waaaah... but its not as much as brad lost... i think it is much feasible to just download them again.. hehe
j.k - October 10, 2007 04:01 PM (GMT)
huh??i guess there's quite alot of computer pros here huh...
then if according to kaoru's theory, i can delete my files which means saving it to the 2nd layer if i dun hav enough space in my hard disk???
then when i got space, i can retrieve it again from the 2nd layer???
does that mean when i format my com along wif the virus...the virus is still there in my com???
@@ @@ @@ @@ confusing....

EDIT: Just realize this is another long geeky post :sry Read when you really have some free time on your hand.
Umm ... this is where Amane's analogy doesn't work. There is no such thing as 2nd layer ... at least with current HDDs. I'll try to be not as technical.
Think of an HDD as a book. Everything below that is in brackets (), I try to use reference to a book to explain. Basically on an HDD, there is something like a database index (aka table of content) of a list of files stored on the computer.
However files (the text) are not necessarily stored in sequence (consecutive pages). Files can be spread out and stored all over the place and out of any order (part 1 in page 3, part 2 in page 100, part 3 in page 74, etc). But there is a link from the index (table of content) and points to part 1 (page 3) and then it has a link to point to part 2 (continue on page 100), etc.
When you delete a file, either direct delete or after emptying the recycling bin, what are you deleting is the the filename from the index (remove from table of content) and mark those respective sections as "not used" but often the actual data may not be erased (tagging page 3, page 100, page 74 as empty pages, but the original text is still on the page).
With these sections being marked as "not used" (empty pages), the HDD may write new file/data, such as copying or downloading files, into those sections overwriting the original data (put new text and overwrite the old text). If that happens, then the original file cannot be fully recovered.
But if you realize early enough and do a recovery, because the the data is still available (text still on the page), it is possible to recover the file by finding the first link to part 1 (finding page 3 is the first page) and follow the link sequence to find the rest of the data (sees there is a continue on page 100 and follows) and remark these sections as "used" (untag the page so it's not an empty page).
Formatting a HDD can erase data in different levels, depending on what kind of formatting. Quick Format usually only erase the index (table of content) but the data is still left behind (text remain on the pages). A Full Format will restructure the index and data sections (table of content and pages), but it still doesn't necessarily really erase data either. A Zero-fill Format, however, will erase index and data and most regular commercial software cannot recover anything from an HDD from this kind of formatting. But there are other high-tech expensive methods that can still recover data from it. FBI probably would use high-tech methods if they do want to go through an HDD for evidence.
For Brad, I'm guessing he only performed a Quick Format. That is probably why he can immediately recover his files and they are not broken/corrupted.
And to answer j.k's question ... No, deleting a file does not move it to a 2nd layer and open up space in the 1st layer. It just deletes the name and filesize from the index (table of content) and the HDD space counts only the files listed in the index. If you then fill your HDD with some other stuff, the new stuff may overwrite the spaces where the deleted files used to be, and the old files will not be recoverable.
And as for formatting to get rid of virus, unless you "want to recover" the virus, a formatted HDD, even if it's just Quick Format, would not have the link to the virus, even if the virus data still remains. And when you fill up your HDD again, new data should eventually overwrite the virus data. So you'll have nothing to worry about.
