Title: Guitar movie... yay!
Description: called 'August Rush'

nataliejwong - October 1, 2007 07:49 PM (GMT)
I posted another thread in the ENTERTAINMENT section, but I realized I should have just posted it here instead, since it is guitar-related. Eee. Sorry!

Anyways, here it is...

The other night Cross and I went to watch The Kingdom, and this movie trailer was playing before The Kingdom in the theatres.

The movie is called 'August Rush'.

A charismatic young Irish guitarist (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) and a sheltered young cellist (Keri Russell) have a chance encounter one magical night above New York's Washington Square, but are soon torn apart, leaving in their wake an infant, orphaned by circumstance. Years later, performing on the streets of New York and cared for by a mysterious stranger (Robin Williams) who gives him the name August Rush, the child (Freddie Highmore) uses his remarkable musical talent in guitar (fingerstyle!) to seek the parents from whom he was separated at birth.

Source: Taken from 'comingsoon.net'

Side note: Freddie Highmore is the kid who played 'Charlie' in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and 'Peter' in Finding Neverland. :)

So, the movie should be coming out on NOVEMBER 21st (in North America). I'm not sure if it's coming out overseas, but I can try to check for those who are outside of NA.

"You know what music is?*caesura* Harmonic connection between all living beings." - BEST QUOTE EVER!!! That's one of the few reasons why I love music. This movie doesn't seem bad at all. It is very unique. Most of us are probably going to watch this only because a guitar is involved . . . Not because of the movie itself. xD

Yeah I know, but you know.. we gotta spread the guitar love... haha.

Cross and I already booked each other to watch this movie when it comes out on the 21st. Haha! Yeah! We should do a Toronto outing for this movie, but it also depends if the members are avaliable to hang out too, since it is coming out during late-November.

Yep, yep! Gibson acoustics. It's cool that he's playing fingerstyle guitaring! Awesomeness...

JustAnotherYUILover
Haha, yes, you are right. When I saw the trailer in the theatre, I noticed the guitar, thus, I wanted to watch it. But now that I've reviewed the trailer about 10 times, the story itself and the characters seem quite interesting. :P

Hmm the one at the inside the case? Biased opinion here, but any movie with Robin Williams in it = funny and good.

I THINK they're Gibson acoustics. The two guitars in the trailers seem to be similar to these two Gibson acoustic guitars...

I'm not a big fan of Gibson acoustics, because they tend to look too decorated with those inlays, binding and old-style looking saddles... but the Firebird/Hummingbird Custom have nice interesting looking pickguard.

yukio - October 3, 2007 07:48 PM (GMT)
haha im not a fan of those guitars either... i think its too old fashioned, not my taste

sirnanzy - October 3, 2007 09:52 PM (GMT)
but there's one guitar with a f hole somewhere in the trailer, although you can only see like 1/4 of it, LOL

Gibson stuffs = family heirloom stuff

Probably a Gibson too. Haha. In another movie still, there's an image of Gibson SG and LP along with the similar Gibson Everly Flat top acoustic. They probably paid the producers to advertise their guitar in this movie.

Here it is:

Ooo.. I think I see that hollowbody^ guitar you were talking about.. it's at the back of the singer in the photograph. It could be that one.

zenaku - October 4, 2007 04:51 PM (GMT)
^ wow everyone's playing a gibson. and there's a violinist too. maybe it's sponsored or maybe only a gibson is good enough lolol. :good

For our Toronto Outing #6 today, we've watched August Rush.

I wouldn't say the movie is good. But I wouldn't consider it as a complete trash. I find the movie's pace was rather Rushed. It would be nice if they slow it down just a bit to show more of the mother and the father's problems, and more of the ending as well.

Freddie Highmore is pretty good. He learned guitar for 6 months before shooting the movie and it really showed. His guitar playing is believable.

Kerry Russel did a decent job playing the cello as well for an actor. As did Jonathan Rhys Meyers on guitar.

The music featured in the movie are pretty good ... especially the slap/tap guitar songs. I really like those and would like to learn them if tabs or official song book comes out. On the soundtrack, these fingering style guitar songs are played by Kaki King, a pretty cool guitar chick. There are more videos of her and her songs on Youtube.

I've uploaded the soundtrack for those who have watched the movie, and as a preview for those who haven't watch it yet.

I think the actors/actresses did a great job in this movie. Yeah, the storyline/scenes were too rushed, boo to the screenwriter(s)!! I'm j/k... I still enjoyed the movie. Those acoustic slapping scenes were really cool, also the orchestra music near the end. :)

Kaki King is pretty cool. It was funny when you were playing another mp3 over one of her videos.

lol i just watched august rush... on fake dvd LMAO. and i really really enjoyed it, not only for the music but for the way the whole thing was put together.

the movie was more of an .... artistic srta movie, and i didnt find it rushed cuz of that i guess. it was more like... mysterious, nearing fantasy, more confusing, mystical perhaps. so i thought the pace was good with the style the movie was made. also, i didnt think that much happened. he just kinda wwandered/ran around. and cuz of the mystical elements everything just fell into place and somehow they ended up together lmao. it was more fantasy than anything. and alot of the parts seems rushed because we didnt get to see alot of it, kinda kept us in the dark, lots of missing scenes that could be there, but the whole movie was in such a style so it was srta ok.

i want to learn the slap/tapping/harmonics/etc techniques haha its impressive

Cross - December 7, 2007 04:18 AM (GMT)
Given that August Rush is a movie about MUSIC, it had better reflect that element strongly within the movie, otherwise it would be a complete flop. In that regard, the movie was a success at providing the audience with some really inspiring and moving soundtracks that made LISTENING to the movie the main aspect of the cinema experience. Having said that, I would have to agree with Snake - I was rather disappointed that the vast majority of characters in the movie lacked any sort of development, other than simply introducing them and indicating how they relate to the main character. The acting was great, but the characters left me feeling the need to learn more about them, and yet the movie never provided that. Too bad, otherwise it would have been a FANTASTIC movie, rather than one that's sort of "eh".

zenaku - December 7, 2007 04:07 PM (GMT)
i think making a music movie nowadays is quite hard cuz theres just so many of them. i agree that everything was quite rushed and that there wasn't much developent or time for development but the music was UBER.

Roxy36 - December 8, 2007 01:02 AM (GMT)
That's the little boy from Finding Neverland! haha

anyway, i've seen some previews too.. it looks pretty good! can't wait to see him shred it up..

geez, it seems that the new generation of guitarists are getting younger and younger these days... @@

Samart - December 8, 2007 01:47 PM (GMT)
planned for 26th of december here.... (France)... I'm gonna see this movie.

Thanks Nacchan !
