Title: Self-tuning guitar (Gibson)
tsunvun86 - September 13, 2007 04:40 PM (GMT)
Powertune Les PaulChoose your desired tuning with a turn of the knob. Sturm lightly on the strings, and wait for the magic to happen in like seconds!
These are the sort of things that make a guitarist become lazy @@
But anyhow who wouldn't want a guitar that tunes inself :P
It also compares it to the Fender VG Stratocastor who claims to have a self-tuning system.
GO GIBSON! :sry

If only they can also apply the same thing to an acoustic, then that would be awesome.
Yeah it does make guitarist lazy. But for professional performers, that means they don't need to change guitars when they play songs that are on different tuning.

:shock whaaaaaat?!?!?! woaaah thats crazy! that would be really helpful. even though i tune my electric by tuner and then by ear some notes played together never sound just right. i wonder if this self tuning guitar would make a difference...

Dang you beat me to it. I was just going to post this. Pretty cool, but I'm just a newbie. I entered the contest too. There's no way I'll win. I entered so many contests and sweepstakes. Haha. . .

| In fact, Fender’s owner’s manual refers to the VG Stratocaster as having “a ‘Tuning’ control”—as in, “a [so-called] ‘Tuning’ control…” There’s virtual, and then there’s actual, when you want the real thing. When it comes to your performance, you want to actually be in tune. Only Gibson’s Powertune System gives you that. |
I can't believe they actually compared the Powertune LP to the VG, isn' that like an open challenge?

I know what you mean. I tune my electric with my multi-effector and the 1st 3 string always sound flatter than it should be. Usually i just tune those 3 strings higher than what that silly machine indicate is the correct tuning :what

At one point I considered entering one of their contests but then found out it was only for within USA........

$900 USD - pass. While it's an innovative device, I'd be concerned with how much additional weight it would put on the headstock. The last thing you need is another element factoring in on the potential of breaking your headstock (i.e. headstock dive to stage floor = :shock)
Another thing would be how well would something like that be able to hold up against some of the more aggressive players out there assuming they'd be interested in buying one.
As for the open challenge - I don't think Fender is going to care all that much. It's like when Coke and Pepsi when they would bash each other. Although the last thing Gibson really needs is to lose another lawsuit, regardless if they're the ones suing or being sued. @@

I don't really like the idea of self-tuned guitars... Some tunings just aren't meant to be with a self-tuning mechanism. I can just imagine the thing going dead on me as I try to tune to BDDDDD. Self-tuners aren't accurate for crazy tunings like that!
I remember a few years ago, such a device was still in development. I actually went to a website which had some uni students claiming that they had a system which could do it and needed some funding. Who knows... It might actually be their system in use now!!
Fender & Gibson both have their different lines of guitars... I'd say it's actually quite hard for them to actually 'compete', looking at the fact that their guitars are actually quite different. Compared to Pepsi and Coke, more people can actually SEE & HEAR DIFFERENCES between a Gibson and a Fender.
Stephen...
Needle tuners are more accurate than digital tuners!! (Which is why they cost more... Unless you're looking at the Boss TU-2 foot-pedal... YYARRRRGGGHHH!!...)

The comparison was meant to draw a relation to how Fender and Gibson are BIG competing companies in the guitar industry, like how Coke and Pepsi are in the beverage market, and thus they wouldn't be worrying about petty remarks being tossed around. Not that Fender and Gibson guitars would taste similar to each other. And who knows, some people (I definitely know a few) just think a guitar is a guitar, regardless of aesthetics, tone woods, neck shapes, etc.
