What guitar do you have?
Are you sure the other strap button isn't located on the back of the guitar, rather than on the edge?
Unfortunately, if the Strap Button/Strap Lock isn't there... You won't be able to ADD a strap button. I, personally, wouldn't want anyone to be drilling holes into the side of my guitar just to add the strap button... So I'm not sure whether it can be done... :S
Best bet is to go with the string... :sry

there is a strap button at the back of the guitar. but the other one is not there. i heard the drilling can cause damage or changes the sound of the guitar becauise of the wood...if so, ill just get on with the strings

That's probably a better idea I guess...
It still is quite strange that you have one strap button and the other one is missing...
What guitar do you have again?

I think he is using acoustic.
My acoustic guitar also like that.
Only have one at the end, then u have to tie the other end at the top of the fretboard.

Shinkaii, like JK said, those are called strap buttons. All guitars have a strap button on the bottom of the guitar. I believe all electric guitars do have an upper strap button. However, NOT ALL acoustic guitars have the upper strap button that are usually located either on the top-side of the body, or on the heel (the little L-shape piece that holds the neck to the body).
Most (if not all) of the expensive guitars do that this button. I'm not sure what is the reason behind it, but most entry and lower range guitars DO NOT have this upper strap button. Mine cost CAD $450 and it still doesn't have one. I'm using a string as well (came with the strap) and tie the strap to the bottom of the headstock. I know it doesn't look as cool, but what can you do, eh?
You CAN add an upper strap button. I've seen ones that simply just glue on to the guitar body, but with anything that's glued on, there's always a possibility of it becoming un-glued and fall off. The worst case scenario would be the button coming off while you're wearing it and your guitar may drop on the ground/floor, which may or may not break it.
You can also drill and screw on a new button. It's recommend that the button is added to the heel since you won't be drilling into the body and may affect the acoustic property. But still, it's better if you can find a luthier to do it for you since it'll involve some precise drilling.

I think the reason behind lower-ended guitars not adding an extra strap button is because of the extra cost of the button and possible need to adjust the body or neck of the guitar to accomodate for the drilled-in button.
I've seen some guitarists use the string over an extra strap button... So no difference on coolness there... It's about how you play rather than what it looks like... right? COME ON PEOPLE... RIGHT??? XD
(Okay... So having a nice guitar is cool too... :P)
I'd recommend NOT gluing a strap button on... Imagine it coming off during playing or a performance... Your guitar will dip headstock first into the ground if you don't catch it properly. I remember reading about a 50/50 chance at catching it... And that's if you're FOCUSSING on actually catching it. Your headstock will probably break due to the force... And the remainder will cause a bump on the body of your guitar.
Go with the string... Tie it securely... Or go to a pro luthier who might be able to do it for you. Your best bet is to save up and get one with 2 strap buttons rather than 1... You get a better guitar at the same time!! XD

mine doesnt have the upper strap button too! the right way to get around this is to get a strap with a string and tie it to the bottom of the fretboard (around the 12th fret?), or the top (1st fret).
drilling holes into the guitar?!?!?! thats scary. i wanted to do that to screw in a raised pick guard (ala les paul) on my electric >.< thankfully i stopped myself
and unless there's really a need to use a strap for an accoustic (say performances), i'd rather go strapless and sit on the floor like dear YUI ^,^

The problem with tying the string on the fretboard is the string cannot be too thick. But this is the best option I guess if you really want the strap close to the guitar body instead of near the headstock, without adding a strap button.

That's the way I go too. My guitar has both strap buttons, but I don't use them. I prefer sitting and playing.

Unfortunately, when performing, it's more comfortable and crowd-friendly to stand up throughout the majority of the performance... Hence the need for a strap...
Even YUI plays with her acoustic guitar while standing... Straps are good!! XD
However, I still like it when she plays sitting down... As she said, it is a more comfortable and natural position! :D
:clap
Whenever I'm playing near my computer, I still wear the strap just in case I'm distracted and lose grip of my guitar... The strap has saved me once or twice!
