Title: Favourite guitar effects!!

JKDragoon - August 27, 2007 02:22 AM (GMT)
Heya!!

What's everyone's 3 most treasured/revered guitar effects?
No cheating by saying you've got a multi-effects pedal system!! (Nothing works better than pressing lots of pedals at the same time!! :D)
You can still vote even if you don't have the pedal itself... As long as you know what it sounds like!!

:clap

JK

P.S. Tell me if I've forgotten an effect!... XD

nataliejwong - August 27, 2007 03:49 AM (GMT)
I'm selling my guitar/effects pedal... sometime this week, blah. But I really like the delay effect.

tsunvun86 - August 27, 2007 04:16 AM (GMT)
Mmmm maybe distortion, chorus and flanger...
I have to play with my pedal more..... I'm such a n00b...

noob eh? Liar.

=O

tsunvun86 - August 27, 2007 05:08 AM (GMT)
Ok I'm semi n00b.... And you're not a good girl either Nat =P

Envelope - August 27, 2007 06:10 AM (GMT)
Delay, though Phasers come really close.

JKDragoon - August 27, 2007 09:09 AM (GMT)
Oooo... Some hostility there between tsunvun86 and nataliejwong!! Hahahaha...
I doubt either of you are n00bs/semi-noobs...
Nat (may I call you that?) is more pro in acoustic and tsunvun86 is more pro in electric... Settle at that... :P
Ahh... We're all guitarists... We shouldn't be arguing! :P

I love to experiment with delay effects... Brings out nice, ghostly sounds and also helps to add some depth to the notes... XD
A good use of the effect was in "Dive to Blue" by L'Arc~en~Ciel... The intro is amazing!!
I don't think any YUI songs use delay though (Not that I've heard or listened to... Need to hear each song more times!!... =.=")

Nat... I remember on your myspace, you have a multi-effects pedal by Digitech?
Anyone else got a multi-effects?
I have one, but I still prefer single ones cause their easier to adjust... Arghh... The back-pain... @@

JK

tsunvun86 - August 27, 2007 12:51 PM (GMT)
I've got a ZOOM 707II... old model.....
The new ones now are all so flashy... *drools*

nataliejwong - August 27, 2007 11:23 PM (GMT)
Yeah. I'm more acoustic because it sounds better than electric... LOL. I'm j/k.... don't hit me.

tsunvun86 is way better than semi-noob. He's a pro! *Grrr*

Yep, I have a multi-effects pedal (Digitech RP300) and Cross uses this multi-effects pedal > Digitech GNX3000.

JKDragoon - August 28, 2007 02:10 AM (GMT)
COOL! Cross has one of the newer multi-effects pedals by Digitech? :P
I have a GNX3 which I've put to good use by getting rid of the first few presets and making my own. Got one for variation (different effects set to what I like), one for acoustic simulation and one for a Santana-like sound (Digitech's version of an Ibanez TS-9)!

Multi-effects pedals are so heavy and bulky though... Unless you're doing a concert, it's better to just use separate pedals (actually... even in concert!!). The only time I've seen an actual guitarist using a multi-effects like GT-8 and GT-6B was during a musical (I think it was "Ms. Saigon")!

:shock

tsunvun86... Wanna do the honours of hitting Nat for making that crude comment about acoustic being better than elec.? :hee j/k j/k!!
I think both styles have times when they shine... :P

:P How long have either of you played guitar?
I played for about 2 years... Stopped coz of uni... And have since started again ever since I saw YUI's performance of "Good-bye Days" in Taiyou no Uta (and also gaining inspiration from John Mayer stuff again...). Surprised that I was still able to play quite decently, though the first few chords were painful and tiring! :clap
Once a guitarist, always a guitarist huh?

tsunvun86 - August 28, 2007 02:42 AM (GMT)
Well I'm not bias on either side. I love both~
But still, saying one is better than the other's so wrong Nat~!! Grrrrr~~

Both Nat and I have been playing for around 7 years.

I don't think all multi-effectors are bulky.. Mine is quite small in size.. it looks miserable compared to the professional ones =.=

JKDragoon - August 28, 2007 03:20 AM (GMT)
WOW!! That long... 7 years? Jeeezzz... Must be ultra-pro by now!!! :P
How come I haven't heard about YOUR debut CD? :hee
I'm sure you're good enough to go into recording!
Or are you one of those more quiet players who excels in secret?! :D

You met up with Nat before? Or just on the forums?
Hahahha... If only warp-travel was possible... All the YUI-Lover guitarists could get together and play one HUGE ensemble of any chosen song...
Imagine the HUNDREDS of amplifiers we could have!! :D :D

:clap

I checked out your ZOOM multi-effects pedal... Yup, I can see why yours is more 'transportable'... So much smaller than mine!... XD
Digitech loves to release all these kinds of new pedals with all-in-one effects. Just look at their 'Distortion Factory' (VERY useful, I must say...), 'Chorus Factory' and Expression Factory... No doubt they'll have a 'Delay Factory' soon!!

i really fancy the overdrive, delay, and chorus.. wellll, mainly because those are the only ones i use... :good

heh, i have a digitech too but mines pretty outdated... it's the RP 50.. next to cross and nat's digitech, mine is gary coleman.. still, it does the job just fine xD that's right gary... that's right..

Wow... The mini-me of all Digitech multi-effects pedals... XD
Must be hell easy to transport for use in performances or band practices! :P
Looks like a lot of people seem to like Digitech's processing system here! (No offence tsunvun86... ZOOM's cool too!)

Anyone like Boss' pedals? Or Line-6 perhaps?
Those pedals could be used as weapons... For crying out loud, they can take ABUSE and still maintain good quality sound. I doubt my GNX3 could withstand drops like what I've heard about Boss and Line-6 pedals. I've never tried 'testing' this claim out though... My precious pedals help me make good music, along with my ELECTRIC GUITAR and AMP...

(To Nat: Who needs acoustics any more when you have acoustic simulators... Muhahahaha... j/k j/k!!... :please I love acoustics too... Have you heard Radical Dreamers ~Unstolen Jewel~ by Yasunori Mitsuda? That would make ANYONE fall in love with acoustic guitars...)

Acoustic simulators still can't beat the original acoustic sound~!!!!!
I hope i can get a better pedal lol.

That's so true... But they do come pretty close! (... =.=" I had to drive my Yamaha Acoustic through an acoustic simulator before it sounded like an acoustic guitar before my performance... JEEZZ... It sounded so plasticky before!)
Nothing beats the depth of an acoustic with a nice shape and made of good wood!

It's a pity that the upper frets TEND to be harder to press on a true acoustic or acoustic-electric...
Unless you have an Martin&Co. "OM-28 JM" or a TAYLOR (*glare* Natalie... *glare*)... Or any high-priced guitar for that matter. But they still won't be as easy as an elec. guitar!

Maybe Nat and you could work out some agreement, seeing that she's willing to sell her pedals?
I'm sure she'd be willing to ship INTERNATIONALLY... :hee
(YUI-Lover Forum Members exclusive privilege of course!)

tsunvun86 - August 28, 2007 12:19 PM (GMT)
Nah... We've already gone through that... She won't do it.. *sobs*
Yeah my Compass Series sounds plastic too plugged in... hmm.... but I still miss that guitar.... *sobs* It's so far away from me.......

nataliejwong - August 28, 2007 01:23 PM (GMT)
tsunvun86
Close. I started when I was 15 years old, and I'm 21 now. I'm about 6 years. Well, I'm going to turn 22 next month, so I guess 7 years is not much off. LOL.

JKDragoon
Nope. I've never met tsunvun86 in person. He's in Australia, and I'm in Canada! I know Cross because he's my boyfriend and I introduced him to YUI. A member from the USA visited Toronto in July and brought his guitar up to Toronto to join the Toronto YUI-lover outing, so it was nice meeting him and strumming a few YUI tunes with him.

It'll be really cool to meet you guys though, that's for sure.

:clap

Roxy36
Nah, the RP50 is still cool! As long as it's Digitech. LOL. I actually was suppose to buy the RP50 back then but my dad kept insisting me to buy the RP300. Haha.

JKDragoon - August 29, 2007 01:08 AM (GMT)
Lost my post... Noooo... :D

JKDragoon - August 29, 2007 01:15 AM (GMT)
Ahahahaha... Let me rip Natalie's style... Muahhaha... =P

tsunvun86...
You could get a plane ticket to Toronto for a holiday... :D
Just look past the fact that you're ACTUALLY going there to pick up Nat's effect pedals... Hehehhe...
NOOO... What did you do to your COMPASS SERIES YAMAHA?? :'(

Natalie...
Here's the plan... Me and tsunvun86 hit the lottery in our home countries and then take a trip to Toronto to jam with you, Cross and the other Canadian YUI-Lovers. We make a CD and then sell it for a charitable cause (i.e. me and tsun's RETURN tickets... :P)
Hahahahaha... Probably wouldn't work and YUI would be angry that we're stealing her songs! :YUIFace
Your dad INSISTED on a higher model? Sounds like he's a guitarist in-the-know too or else he was going for value-for-money... The RP300 is SUPPOSED to be more worth it in the long run.

I started in middle of the year... er... 2000 I think?

My Compass series is still intact~! It even survived a falling ceiling~!! LOL

It's in Malaysia.. and I'm in Australia at the moment...... I need some acoustic action *sobs* I only have an electric here......

Hey Nat I'm still waiting for that Ibanez of yours :clap

zenaku - August 29, 2007 02:26 PM (GMT)
i like overdrive, distortion and chorus effects. i used to use a korg effects board but left it in hk....used digitech metalzone and overdrive pedals before but never owned any. need to get some of my own soon. oh im in toronto now btw, lol.

Nat ... start a new thread in the Outing section for Outing #4 then :good

I have a Digitech DF-7 Distortion Factory stompbox that's a lot of fun to play with. It comes with 7 different "classic" stompbox sounds, and they all sound pretty good. Currently, I have it set to the Ibanez Tube Screamer sound, which adds a slight volume boost to my sound while also giving it a little bit more "bite". I bought this pedal for the sole reason that I was getting 7 stomboxes in one unit at an affordable price ($140 CAD), rather than coughing up a lot more dough on a single box that will provide only one sound =P.

The same applies with the Digitech GNX3000 - I bought it so I could have a boatload of effects available rather than buying all the individual ones and then having to compare them to the various brands. It's a good way to get introduced to what each of the different effects sound like without breaking the bank, as well as providing a basic understanding as to where each pedal is generally placed within the effects chain. The other reason why I bought the GNX3k was to get a greater variety of sounds from my amp. I'm running a Crate Powerblock through a Marshall 1936, and the PB has only 1 channel. So by having the GNX3k, I am able to program at least 2 different amp sounds within a single preset, thus turning the PB into a 2-channel amp.

Anyways, I hope this post makes sense, as I'm a bit light-headed after only having returned from my vacation a few hours prior to posting. I think I need a nap :sry

I have a DF-7 too and woooohoooo... Boy does that thing have versatility!!
Great money for value... But I'm always a little suspicious of whether the circuitry can really handle all the 'ooommpphhh' from all the different distortion models.

Nothing like the original stuff huh? XD

Cross - September 2, 2007 09:57 PM (GMT)
I'm sure the "real" stuff would be great and all, but it also commands a higher price - I'm not willing to spend cash on pedals just yet - I'd like to save the $$ for guitars anyway. Also, I don't feel the need to go all out on a pedal board as I don't play out all that often...maybe one day if somehow I ever go pro @@

Nahh... Even the pros sometimes cheat and buy these coupled-effects pedals!!

I'm aiming for a new guitar too... I have more than enough effects to play with and I'm not that big of a fan of wah-wah/whammy/pitch shifter/octaver/tremolo/flanger pedals. Maybe it's time I played with those too on my digitech... *drool* ("Good-bye days"... tremoro as the Japanese spell it....).
It's so annoying to power individual pedals too... Thank goodness I found an adapter that worked for ALL my pedals (except the Digi GNX3 which uses a separate power supply!). Plus, I went to this side shop in Malaysia that sold these cool cables for linking the pedals. The cables were really cheap... And the sound output was not affected!!... (Or, at least, from what I heard...)

JK

Cross - September 4, 2007 10:03 PM (GMT)
Yesss - power supplies are the best investment you could ever make if you plan on using effects pedals. My Voodoo Lab Pedal Power II has saved me a boatload of money that might have otherwise been spent on replacement 9V batteries.

JKDragoon - September 5, 2007 04:06 AM (GMT)
NOOOO!!!! OMG...
I've never seen that piece of equipment before!!... NOOOOO... XD
HK doesn't sell that thing ever since they have the cheaper 9V battery thing... :'(
How come, for me, BOSS and Line-6 pedals are the same supply whereas the Voodoo differentiates them??!!
NOOO... Have I destroyed my pedals already... Alas... :'(

---
JK

Cross - September 5, 2007 04:45 AM (GMT)
Power supplies are pretty much the same - if they can power up your pedals, then you're gold. I chose the PPII because it received a lot of positive reviews and it seemed to be a reliable power supply.

The PPII diffrentiates between Boss and Line 6 pedals, depending on what L6 pedal you have. If the are the larger effects pedals such as the DL4, MM4, etc, they require more power and thus you can configure the individual plugs to suit that. If you have the L6 Tonecore pedals, they should work like your regular BOSS pedals, unless stated otherwise in the manual. I'm not looking right now - I only have BOSS and Digitech anyways, so it doesn't really affect me.

JKDragoon - September 5, 2007 04:52 AM (GMT)
Phew... Thx man... Was worried that my pedals would've been pretty much messed up by now, considering how long I was using the cheaper power supply. My shop dude said it would work for all my pedals... So I wasn't too worried... =.="

The PPII is looking good... I'll look into it during my next guitar try-out... Which is unfortunately, a long way away...
It looks pretty small... So it should be convenient for re-arranging my guitar equipment and making everything look more compacted!... :D

I do like when Joe Satriani is make the guitar effect.
I like those horse voice. It so realllllll
Make me wanna play it too
Must have a hard exercise hehe

Cross - September 29, 2007 11:28 AM (GMT)
Not sure if this counts as an effect, but I recently bought a Boss RC-2 Loop Station pedal and I can tell you that it's a lot of fun to play around with. It's great for simply jamming along to the drum patterns provided in the unit, but what really makes it a keeper is the fact that it's a sort of digital notepad for saving your musical ideas in the pedal's memory. You can create your own guitar rhythm track, loop it and jam along to your playing. It really helps if you don't have a second person around to bug and play a rhythm part for you =P. Definitely a lot of features packed into a single pedal, cool stuff.

yukio - September 29, 2007 03:50 PM (GMT)
ooooh thats pretty cool.. lol, wouldnt it help in recording? like will it mix a few layers of guitar for you and u can put it onto comp?

Cross - September 29, 2007 08:34 PM (GMT)
I suppose there's a way you can do it - I mean if you've got all your pedals in the chain and decide to create a loop live instead of using the recording program, then why not? Although you'd probably want to use a program to create your loops than with a loop pedal, which would mean you're probably more likely to make mistakes and you don't have as much flexibility with the pedal versus program. The loop station is probably more for live usage - it has enough features for creating and jamming to loops on the go, but not as much as something like using Cubase and creating an X number of sound layers.
