Title: How many language do you speak ?

Ryō - March 4, 2006 10:37 AM (GMT)
All is in the title !

Like we are on an international forum and a great majority here speak English whereas it's not its mother language, it oculd be interesting to know that ^^

Personnally, I speak a fluent French XD a very good English (I think), a good Spanish and a little Portuguese (very little)...

neoreturn - March 4, 2006 11:00 AM (GMT)
I only speak french well ( I can speak, read, write it )
In English, I can understand what people write (and sometimes what they says ) but I've problem to write and speak <_<
I studying Deutsh ... I never understand ... :D ( I never had more than 3/20 at Deutsh's test ) B)

Only 1 language for me :(

longtusk - March 4, 2006 11:06 AM (GMT)
Hey, you guys' English is so good!!! :o Man, I wish I could speak another language as well as that, lol... too bad I'm stupid and am only stuck with one (i.e., this one xD)
I reckon it'd be so cool to be multilingual.

Risa - March 4, 2006 11:09 AM (GMT)
I can speak Dutch very good! ;) And English, I'm good at in on school...
I get French and German on school too.. but I'm really really bad at it!

atheon - March 4, 2006 11:48 AM (GMT)
I guess its good living in multi-racial country........
I can speak
1. Chinese (mother tougue)
2. English
3. Malay
4. Hokkien (Chinese slang)
5. Cantonese
6. Japanese
7. Hakka (chinese slang)
From ok to not so good....... :P i can only speak chinese fluently, the rest just...bleh :ph43r:

AditZ - March 4, 2006 11:52 AM (GMT)
Indonesian (my mother language) and English. I'm fluently in Indonesian language and very familiar with English. :)

blue cat - March 4, 2006 03:50 PM (GMT)
Let's see...

1. English - 100% fluent in speaking, listening comprehension, reading, and writing.

2. Japanese - not fluent but I can speak and understand a bit, and I can read and write well. I know all my hiragana and katakana very well, and I know a decent amount of Kanji.

3. Korean - I can only speak a little bit, but I can understand the language fairly well. Although, I cannot read nor write Hangul (*the Korean alphabet).

So, three languages. :D

Gin - March 4, 2006 04:47 PM (GMT)
English: Native Tongue. Complete, fluent understanding.

Japanese: Well on its way to being my second language. I'm somewhat on the intermediate level of understanding: I can pick out words and sentences, and get a general understanding of what's being said. My reading comprehension, however, is much better than that of my listening. The only real obstacle in my way of reading is vocabulary, but thanks to my built-in Japanese dictionary I can look up words very quickly, and as such, learn them very quickly. I can read and write Hiragana and Katakana very well, and I know about a third of the general list Kanji, my knowledge of which increases daily. :)

Spanish: Basic understanding, but nowhere near the comprehension I had in the past. I just haven't used it much for it to stick in my memory.

So, I'd say 2 languages, really. :)

DrAkS - March 4, 2006 06:12 PM (GMT)
I can speak French ( my mother language ) and a little english , a little spanish and the next year Japanase :) :)

Orange Toast - March 4, 2006 07:44 PM (GMT)
Fluent in:
1. Cantonese - Read/Write/Speak
2. English - duh??

Working Knowledge in:
3. French - Read/Speak <-- forced to learn in Canadian schools
4. Korean - Speak <-- just know the very basic phrases, like ordering food

So just 3 for me.

Ty_Sylicus - March 4, 2006 09:26 PM (GMT)
I only know English. -_- That's not a bad thing to know though!

I studied Spanish in School, but haven't used it for years. I can only speak in small roughly put together phrases. I can't really read, write, or comprehend anymore. I like to say I know enough Spanish to survive if I woke up lost in a Spanish speaking country!

I've been interested in Japanese for a little while now, but my life is too busy to really study it deeply. I will have more time to study after College. :D

I spent over a year in Korea, but I only learned a small bit of the langauge. It's been about a year since then, and I can only rmr a few words. :(

EndtoInfinity930 - March 4, 2006 09:56 PM (GMT)
1. English (mother language)

2. Japanese-- working my way to become fluent in it. I'm in my first year of Japanese at my high school, but I have the knowledge of almost a 3rd year  I just love Japanese so much.. like I seriously don't know what my hobby would be if I didn't have it. Hah, I can sing fluently in Japanese.. does that count? hehe

Kcman123 - March 5, 2006 12:17 AM (GMT)
I can speak
1. Canto and Mandarin Chinese (canto being mother tongue)
2. English (Fluent)
3. Spanish(most of it unless i Lost it all from not speaking for 2 years of it)
4. Japanese (A little)
5. Korean(I learned more korean at Shanghai University rather than Mandarin!)
6. Qiao Zhou(Little)

Orange Toast - March 5, 2006 02:41 AM (GMT)
On a related note did you know that ppl who are fluent in only 1 language will have a significantly slower response time when they get old than those who know more than 1 language.

ItIsHerWhoDidIt - March 5, 2006 03:40 AM (GMT)
thats why we should have at least 2 languages at hand

i know :
1)Chinese
2)English
3)Bahasa Malaysia
4)Cantonese

i heard that hong kong is starting to teach their kids chinese, is it true?

csmd - March 5, 2006 04:02 AM (GMT)
Erm..for me, I know:
1.English (mother tongue)
2.French
3.Chinese

And I understand a bit of:
1.Spanish (1 year of class didn't really stick with me XD)
2.Japanese (still learning)

ZiN - March 5, 2006 04:02 AM (GMT)
Hhmm... I can speak in...

1. Cantonese - Mother tongue
2. English - fluent
3. Mandarin - consider fluet I think...
4. Malay (Bahasa Melayu) - rusty... never used it for 3 years maybe... feels awkward speaking in Malay now

I don't know how to write in Chinese or speak other sub-chinese language eg. Hokkien, Hakka, Teochew.. :(

Panukeku - March 5, 2006 08:36 PM (GMT)
For me I'm fluent in

1) Cantonese (Mother tongue)
2) English

I actually am not sure if I'm fluent in Cantonese or English more... but then I guess you can say I'm pretty okay with both.

For the languages I am NOT fluent but understand bits of are:

3) French (we sorta have to learn it in school... should I drop it this year?...Advices anyone?)
4) Japanese (I won't even kid myself- I'm not fluent at all. I can pick up- like- the tiniest pieces because I've been really interested in Anime and :D YUI :D lately. And I might be going with my friend to learn Jap...dunno

3) French (we sorta have to learn it in school... should I drop it this year?...Advices anyone?)

1)French is only speaking in France, a part of Belgium and other small European country....
2)French is not very difficult to speak ( non more an other latin language) , but is very difficult to write (French grammar is very difficult, even for lots of french people ... )
3) If you need French for your future, keep it, else ... do as you wish

Cammy Kotori - March 5, 2006 10:09 PM (GMT)
Portuguese and English

I'm starting to learn japanese too ^_^

GoSuLoLi - March 5, 2006 10:15 PM (GMT)
i can speak fluently in:
Tagalog
and in English....i think.....>___>;;;

and a little bit Nihongo. ^__^

viper92583 - March 5, 2006 11:35 PM (GMT)
i'm trying to remember how a list like this would go for me...let's see...

English: native-level, fully fluent...in fact, it's the only language i'm comfortable enough with to disregard rules entirely :P

German: a bit...not so good at speaking, but reading and some listening/writing...

Spanish: working knowledge, but not enough to claim practical fluency of any sort...

French, Italian, Portuguese, Austrian German (rather close to German proper, but my old teacher taught me a few of the little differences that are more tedious than necessary): familiarity with, and some varied degrees of ability in reading...not so much with writing or speaking, but that's always been the way i am with languages...

Japanese: enough to get myself in trouble, and not enough to know why...

yep...that about covers it. fluency? 1 language (will be working on 2 more soon (German and Japanese), and when i get further along, possibly Mandarin...)...practical knowledge? 7...but it's sometimes easier when you speak English since words from those 6 languages are all roots to the words I use in everyday life...*shrugs*

You need French in parts of Canada too. And since I think you (Panukeku) said that you were Canadian, I think you should stick with learning French if you plan on staying or moving around in Canada. It'll be very useful for you since Canada is supposed to be bilingual.

XMarksTheSpot! - March 6, 2006 04:38 AM (GMT)
just 2:

-Indonesian

-English, literally not speakable - doesn't get a lot of chances to speak.

-3 if you count Indonesian slang language ^^ (bahasa gaul LoL)

In facts I know a little of local languages here like Javanese (not japanese LoL), Sundanese, Makasarese ^^

ItIsHerWhoDidIt - March 6, 2006 06:28 AM (GMT)
my maid tells me that the local languages in indonesia can be either Kasar or something else...

ah...I think it must be about polite or less-polite(kasar) language. For example, the word 'eat' in Sundanese, the polite one is 'tuang' and the less-polite one is 'dahar'..

Your maid is from Indonesia?

*Shine! - March 7, 2006 01:34 AM (GMT)
