Title: Is this normal?

hanguknamja - May 24, 2007 04:24 PM (GMT)
I know my fingers are supposed to get rough from playing but is it ok if they are starting to peel?
My middle, index, and wedding fingers have gotten pretty rough but are starting to peel and show dead skin.

Sorry if this is gross :scare

lol its normal

you'll get used to blisters as well :swt

back in my old band days, i'd play my guitar until my fingers start to bleed :swt

Yes, skin is suppose to peel. That's how the new skin underneath will grow. It happens so just be patient and keep practicing.

I've only had my ring finger's skin peel off so far and developed some callous. It seems I use that finger as the pivot most of the time and I do put more pressure with that finger as well. My other fingers feel pretty much the same as they did before I started playing the guitar.

nataliejwong - May 24, 2007 08:42 PM (GMT)
Yep, yep. Mine were all purple, bruised and painful when I started out on the guitar.

hanguknamja - May 25, 2007 05:18 AM (GMT)
Thanks for the help everyone!
Also does it go away? :swt

s0l1dsn8k3 - May 25, 2007 05:45 AM (GMT)
In a sense, it does go away as in the new skin underneath will grow and it hardens a little into callous. Once the tougher skin is formed, you will have less chance of skin peeling off.

natsumi - May 25, 2007 06:00 AM (GMT)
yea, that happens to me all the time.... i always peel them when i have nothin to do lol :swt but i regretted peeling them sometime later... cause i have to re-develop the callousses :swt

i bled once...

sucks when u get cut by a string...

cherii - May 25, 2007 06:37 AM (GMT)
Eek! Not much has happened to mine, sometimes it starts peeling and then the next morning, they're fine again. Basically, my fingers are just tougher than they were at the beginning.

tsunvun86 - May 25, 2007 11:31 AM (GMT)
Bleeding is too severe~~~ Goodness what were you guys doing with yr fingers~~
My fingers bleed too but not that way.... When I do too much bending, my nail will eventually get pulled from my finger and eventually it will peel a bit of my nail of my finger..... And also if when the string slips when I'm bending... it gets straigth between nail n finger... and that peels it too... T.T

Gross huh....

>ch|yo< - May 25, 2007 11:39 AM (GMT)
^ pain ><"
i never get cuts from steel strings before...never...
thats all so scary

PeaceViolet - May 25, 2007 12:38 PM (GMT)
haha.. im also having the same situation here, i have already started learning guitar for about a month.. now all my finger tips except thumb are harden n rough, especially index finger, it has peel off n reform new skin for many times, maybe i press the string too hard with that finger.. and what im having problem is, my little small finger seems so weak, usually i cant even press the strring probably.. that makes the sound pitch off :huhuhu

btw what's bending? the bleeding sounds frightening!

Bending is a technique to change the pitch of a particular guitar string by "bending" (i.e; pushing the string pressed by your fingers on the fretboard towards your face, but don't overdo it :swt). This technique is usually used by lead guitarists and classical guitar players.

well my fingers bled because;
1. guitar is my only place to channel my emotions
2. my favourite songs at that time were the ones sung by NIRVANA

Oooh~ that is called bending! XD thanks for the info, now i have learnt one more new thing about guitar

^ Bending is actually used more often with Electric guitars because of the more flexible strings. The tension of the Acoustic steel strings makes them a bit difficult to bend, although a slight bending can still be achieved.

tsunvun86 - May 25, 2007 04:06 PM (GMT)
Slight bending on the acoustic?
I think I abuse the acoustic too... Forgive me.....
Bend 4 string with all 4 fingers at once. It's fun ! :P

s0l1dsn8k3 - May 25, 2007 04:13 PM (GMT)
bending 4 strings on the acoustic? Crazy! :shock

Pretty hardcore, there, tsunvun86.

tsunvun86 - May 25, 2007 04:24 PM (GMT)
Well i was just doing it on an electric... but on an acoustic will do too I guess but just not that far from the original note.... :P

br4d137 - May 25, 2007 04:54 PM (GMT)
