Hey there.. there was thread on how to strum Tokyo two or three months ago.. I'll try to find it for you.

I sort of strum it down, down, down, up. But it's hard to explain in words... I'll try to find my video on it. I recorded a few short videos on how to strum a few YUI songs back in Nov.. but now they're all deleted.. :S I think I saved it on my backup drive. I"ll search it for you.

:)

Hmm.. I always see question like these asking for strum patterns.... But I really wonder how you describe it using words......

I just switched on TOKYO... from what i hear....
When u start it's
down down down up - down down down up-repeat

But when it reaches the bridge the pattern changes... So it's kinda hard describing it like this....
Person to person interaction is always the best :D

I don't know anything about guitars but I'd love to learn. Just wondering... does the sound change if you strummed it downwards instead of up? :S

Haha, really? No seriously, I don't know T_T.

tsunvun86 - May 1, 2007 11:39 AM (GMT)
Yes it does....
When you're strumming, you're actually playing a whole bunch of notes together.
When you're strumming down, you playing them in a particular order.
But if you're strumming up the order changes.

For example you strum down, the notes u get are:
a b c d e f (in that order)

Then you strum up, the notes u'll get:
f e d c b a (in that order)

You're playing the same notes, but in different patterns. You hear "a" first then "b" then "c". But it'll be the other way around if you're strumming up as in hearing "f" first etc

EDIT: Although the difference in up n down strokes, in all u'll get the same key.

cherii - May 1, 2007 11:55 AM (GMT)
I remember that it was down x4 and then up. I do that, but I think my actually strumming comes in the wrong times. XD *shrugs* Maybe I'll be able to show off if we have a Sydney YL outing...seems I'm the only one who has a guitar or something. ^^"

tsunvun86 - May 1, 2007 12:04 PM (GMT)
Sydney?
I'm in Brisbane :D

thx very much.. hope you can find it pls.. :D

about the strumming.. firstly i learned that the strumming is like down down down&up... which played like 2 times in chord G & chord D at the beginning, right? then at chord Am & chord C, on the music sheet the strumming pattren changed, quite confused, don't know how to read them..

Flare - May 1, 2007 05:12 PM (GMT)
Tokyo, on the tabs, the backing pattern is:
down-down-down-down/up/down-down-down-down/up

You change chords after the 1/16 up stroke and immediately strike the down stroke. there's no rest after the up stroke.

Or you can play:
down---down-down/up/down---down-down/up

which is actually the strum for the first bar in the tabs. Same thing, change chords after the up stroke....

I've got some explanations on how to read strums on the forum somewhere... I got a pretty detailed one in the thread about 'I remember you' strums. i'm posting from my phone now, i'll add a link when i get to use the computer

nataliejwong - May 1, 2007 09:34 PM (GMT)
Here's the link to the TOKYO thread on 'strum pattern'.. there's a few pages, so you might have take time to read it over..

what's 1/16 up stroke?
and do u mean that i play down down down&up on the 1st bar? and then down down down down&up for the next right?

PeaceViolet - May 7, 2007 05:12 PM (GMT)
finally can follow the strumming 4 the whole song XD
but still cant figure out how the intro is.. cant understand the music sheet either.. can any1 help me? onegai~ :huhuhu

tsunvun86 - May 7, 2007 09:44 PM (GMT)
The intro in the original song is a plucking pattern.
But still you can use a simple strummin pattern like:
down down down
down up
down down down
down up
down down down etc......

did you mean?
G
downx3 downup
Am7
downx3 downup
G
downx3 downup
Cadd9
downx3 downup

what about plucking pattern? just pluck the string mentioned one by one? sorry that i ask too much, im a new learner so don't understand much about that.. :P

tsunvun86 - May 8, 2007 08:06 AM (GMT)
Yes that's what I meant. And yes, plucking is pressing a chord while playing the strings one by one in some pattern.

PeaceViolet - May 8, 2007 09:40 AM (GMT)
ic.. if i use plucking..
like at G chord
the tab is like
--3--
--3--
--0--
--0--
--2--
--3--

which should i pluck 1st? and the chord G how?

tsunvun86 - May 8, 2007 10:20 AM (GMT)
The plucking for the intro is really simple. Press this G:
--3--
--3--
--4--
--5--
-----
-----
then play:
--3---5-------
----3----3----
--------------- x6
---------------
---------------
---------------

--3----5----5------------
-----3-------3----------
-------------4-------------
-------------5------------
Play the "5" by holding on the same chord and adding yr pinky to the 5th fret.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wooops... there's another plucking pattern in the background
G Am7(11) BonG Cadd9
-------3-------------3----------3------------3-----
----------3----------3-------------3-------- 3------
---------------------0--------0--------------0-------
---0-------------2---2-------------------2--2------
---------------0-----0-----2-----------3----3------
-3--------------------------------------------------

G Am7(11) BonG Cadd9
------3----------3--------3--3----
------3----------3-----------3-
--0-- 0----------0-----------0-
------0-------2--2------0---2-----
------2-----0----0----2-----3--
-3---3------------------------

PeaceViolet - May 8, 2007 11:14 AM (GMT)
o.O i cant understand at all.. isnt that chord G is
--3--
--3--
--0--
--0--
--2--
--3--

sorry im quite confused..
could you please simplify it.. gomeneh..

tsunvun86 - May 8, 2007 11:17 AM (GMT)
The one I posted is another way to press G.
There can be a lot of ways to press a chord.
And that way is the most suitable for that plucking pattern.

PeaceViolet - May 8, 2007 11:26 AM (GMT)
icic sorry for that, i dont know that hehe

so now i press
--3--
--3--
--4--
--5--
-----
-----
then which string i pluck the 1st?

tsunvun86 - May 8, 2007 11:59 AM (GMT)
I have already put the tabs in the same post.

PeaceViolet - May 8, 2007 12:23 PM (GMT)
sorry im so slow to understand it, cause i don't understand the tabs
i got it now hehe.. :swt
there's 1 thing i like to know, at chord Am7(11),
----3--
----3--
----0--
--2--2
0------
--------

is it i strum from 3th to 1st string?

tsunvun86 - May 8, 2007 12:26 PM (GMT)
You didn't copy correctly... There should also be 5th and 4th string. You strum from 5th to 1st. When ever you see a straight line of notes just strum from where is is marked.

PeaceViolet - May 8, 2007 12:42 PM (GMT)
------3------
------3------
------0------
---2--2--2--
0-----0------
--------------
sorry..am i correct? :P

tsunvun86 - May 8, 2007 12:48 PM (GMT)
Well no.... you don't have to copy it out...
Just follow what I put there.

PeaceViolet - May 8, 2007 12:53 PM (GMT)
huh? still incorrect? i have already looked carefully at your post.. omg, can u correct me? so that i wont get wrong when i play the Am7(11).. sorry for the trouble.. gomeh gomeh..

Okay........

Am7(11)

--3--

This is Am7(11).. Then just pluck to whatever I've put there..

PeaceViolet - May 8, 2007 01:04 PM (GMT)
