Summary:
Keisuke Yamato is a bronze medallist for 100m freestyle swimming, but he doesn't seem able to get any better. He is also the only son and heir to the Yamato chain of confectionery stores, which are arch-rivals and competitors with the Ninomiya chain of confectionery stores. When he enters high school, he meets Ami Ninomiya, only daughter of the Ninomiyas, and a talented high-diver with a grudge against him. Against a strong backdrop of supporting characters, what begins as mutual dislike on both sides grows into a strong friendship - and maybe more.

Review:
Rough is unique in that it features swimming, a competitive sport quite different from the baseball, softball and boxing that Adachi likes. And though the faintly Romeo-and-Juliet-esque tale quickly hooks you in, the plot does differ quite widely from that tragedy. Nothing is ever said until the very last minute, in typical Adachi fashion, and the ending is one of the most controversial ones, in that fans will either love it for its sweetness and subtlety, or hate it for leaving off where it did. A solid Adachi work, with plenty of love, rivalry, and drama.

w0w you read it in japanese?

I also read this manga a lot of times..IMO it's one of the best Adachi's work..The ending is great..I think Adachi's decision to make it left-off is wise..because it's somewhat cliche to let Yamato win the competition and to let his rival win would make the readers dissapointed, moreover it doesn't really matter whether Yamato or his rival who wins. What's important is Ami's decision, which is presented by Adachi in quite a way..
