Title: Translate TOKYO phone call
Fandan - February 23, 2007 11:13 AM (GMT)
Can someone translate her phone conversation on the train platform in the PV before the song starts? Let me start:
YUI: Moshimoshi? (Hello?)
YUI: ????
YUI: hmph ???? hmm
YUI: ???? hmm
YUI: Ja ittekimasu (Ok I'm going)
YUI: Ja ne (Seeya)
Doesn't sound like the happiest of conversations. I wonder if her parents or friends were on that platform when she traveled to Tokyo. Did she travel alone? Or is the song figurative of how she felt on the inside with all of the changes occurring in her life.
Alpharius - February 23, 2007 08:11 PM (GMT)
YUI: -Hello?
- Were you sleeping?
- Hmp, you just yawned, didn't you?
- Hm...I'm heading there now
- Ok I'm going
- See you later
I think thats right....lol

Thanks for translating. :) I wanted to know what she's talking about for a long time ago but I always forgot to ask. :P
Fandan - February 24, 2007 06:47 AM (GMT)
Thanks for the translation, Alpharius. I wonder who she was talking to? Is she boarding the train for Tokyo, or is this just a train ride in Tokyo and she's just feeling lonely and overwhelmed at her new surroundings? Man it makes me feel sad just wondering what she was going through at the time.

I don't think there is mentioning of whom she is calling in the video. One obvious possibility is that she is calling her mother/family member. It could be her friends, as she specifically mentioned emailing friends in the lyrics.
The song's title is Tokyo, and the lyrics are about her own journey leaving (her hometown presumably) for Tokyo by train.

I figured the video was about her first trip to Tokyo, but I wonder if maybe it was just any train trip in Tokyo, and she was lonely and reminiscing back at the first trip while on this trip. Or was the video actually supposed to represent her actual first trip to Tokyo. Am I making any sense?
If it was reflecting her first trip to Tokyo, why aren't her parents or friends at the station seeing her off? Why is the only contact a short phone conversation? Is the lack of people a figurative or literal representation of the loneliness she felt inside during this trip?

Read the lyrics of TOKYO B)
I think they 'modified' some parts of the MTV, because, it's a music video. That's why it might not be the same situation when YUI first take the train to Tokyo. To make it more dramatic.
wait now you got me thinking lol, maybe she is refering the time when she MOVED to Tokyo, because she did 'fly' to Tokyo for the Sony audition thing before that......hmm...
Fandan - February 24, 2007 10:24 AM (GMT)
I'd guess she flew to Tokyo when she moved too, and Sony took care of moving her personal belongings via freight. Like you said, in the PV they changed things for dramatic effect. For example, the type of train she is riding in the video is only for local service. For moving from Fukuoka to Tokyo, she probably would have taken a shinkansen. Of course, she might have had to take the local train in Fukuoka to get to the main JR station in order to take the shinkansen to Tokyo.
Man oh man, what I would give to have been on that train trip with her, holding her hand, reassuring her, and then basking in her inevitable success  .
atheon - February 24, 2007 10:50 AM (GMT)
I read that she took the plane for the first time when she went/ moved to Tokyo, but in the lyrics of TOKYO she was refering to the train.
My guess will be:
1. First took the plane to attend the audition.
2. Then took the bus + train + shinkansen to Tokyo after she won the audition, means that she have to moved to Tokyo to persue her dreams.
I should go and read back her history again XD
Fandan - February 24, 2007 04:39 PM (GMT)
Oh cool, so the start of the PV is what she refers to in the song:
"At the station I tried calling someone, but something felt different about it all"
That's freakin' sweet. Thanks again for the translation, it takes us that much closer to getting to know YUI.
natsumi - February 24, 2007 05:40 PM (GMT)

If you wanna see dear YUI cries for real, watch the making/ documentary thing of Taiyou no Uta :) (the DVD which comes along with the movie).
Just a drop of tear though.

I'll have to 'dig' out my YUI collection then XD I think the 'one drop of tear' moment is towards the end. During the movie screening in cinema. YUI went there with her backpack:D
btw, YUI did cry in TOKYO pv, even though it was just a scene, maybe she suddenly miss her mom or something :)

Hmm Nice translation.. :clap
nihongogakusei - February 14, 2008 04:46 AM (GMT)
Here's the translation:
もしもし
今のだった
いま、苦しいだろう
うん...
いまから行く所
うん...
じゃ、行ってきます
じゃね...
moshi moshi
ima no datta
ima, kurushii darou
un...
ima kara iku toko
un...
ja, ittekimasu
ja ne...
hello?
Just now...
It's [painful, difficult] ya know?
yeah...
I'm going there now [to that place]
yeah...
well, I'm off
seeya...
**ima no datta literally means, "I just done it"
I'm assuming her friend, mother or whoever it is has asked something along the lines of "have you left?" or "when did you leave?"
**kurushii this can translate as either "painful" or "difficult" used with "ima" I think she is implying that now that she has left, it's painful/hard for her.
**ja ne... I hate this part, she sounds so hurt and upset. Almost like a farewell...
Hope that helps. I'm not used to writing it out, it's hard to actually translate how you have interpreted it.
vivi - February 14, 2008 11:19 AM (GMT)
^ Um, Alpharius's translation is correct.
You misheard some words because of the dialect.
~とった(~ていた) and ~やろ(でしょ), these expressions are common in western Japan.
もしもし、今寝とった?
今あくびしたやろ
今から行くとこ
じゃ、行ってきます
じゃあね

duransinlui - March 21, 2008 11:59 AM (GMT)
I love this PV... :suki :suki
