Romance of The Three Kingdoms

Yea, who like the story of Romance of The Three Kingdoms? As for me, I'm a big BIG fan of this story. This is one of the best heroic/war stories had ever exist! So anyone? Feel free to post anything related and discuss it here. Romance of The Three Kingdoms is based on a true story and is a mix of many aspects of life. The greatest story ever told.

I'm not a typical person who could read books continuously but I never got tired reading 4 big books of the complete history of the three kingdoms. :)

Summarized:

The Three Kingdoms period (Simplified Chinese: 三国; Traditional Chinese: 三國; pinyin: Sānguó) is a period in the history of China, part of an era of disunity called the Six Dynasties. In a strict academic sense it refers to the period between the foundation of the Wei in 220 and the conquest of the Wu by the Jin Dynasty in 280. However, many Chinese historians and laymen extend the starting point of this period back to the uprising of the Yellow Turbans in 184.

The earlier, "unofficial" part of the period, from 190 to 220, was marked by chaotic infighting between warlords in various parts of China. The middle part of the period, from 220 and 263, was marked by a more militarily stable arrangement between three rival states, Kingdom of Wei (魏), Kingdom of Shu Han (漢), and Kingdom of Wu (吳). The later part of this period was marked by the collapse of the tripartite situation: first the destruction of Shu by Wei (263), then the overthrow of Wei by the Jin Dynasty (265), and the destruction of Wu by Jin (280).

To distinguish these states from earlier states of the same name, historians prepended a character: Wei is also known as Cao Wei (曹魏), Han is also known as Shu Han (蜀漢), which later became more commonly known as Shu, and Wu is also known as Eastern Wu (東吳).

The term "Three Kingdoms" itself is somewhat of a mistranslation, since each state was eventually headed by an Emperor who claimed legitimate succession from the Han Dynasty, not by kings. Nevertheless the term has become standard among sinologists and will be used in this article.

Although relatively short, this historical period has been greatly romanticised in the cultures of China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam. It has been celebrated and popularised in operas, folk stories, novels and in more recent times, films, television serials, and video games. The best known of these is undoubtedly the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, a fictional account of the period which draws heavily on history. The authoritative historical record of the era is Chen Shou's Sanguo Zhi, along with Pei Songzhi's later annotations of the text.

The Three Kingdoms period is one of the bloodiest in Chinese history. A population census in late Eastern Han Dynasty reported a population of approximately 56 million, while a population census in early Western Jin dynasty (after Jin re-unified China) reported a population of approximately 16 million. Even taking into account the inaccuracies of these census reports, it's safe to assume that a large percentage of the population was wiped out during the constant wars waged during this period.

The three kingdoms era was divided into:

1 Collapse of dynastic power of Han
* Yellow turban rebellion
* Dong Zhuo reigns of terror
* Land divided by regional landlords
2 The rise of Cao Cao
* Lu Bu's turmoil
* The battle of Guan Du: Cao Cao vs Yuan Shao
* Liu Bei's great escape and the rise of the sleeping dragon
3 Red Cliffs and its aftermath
* Liu Bei / Sun Quan alliance against Cao Cao
* The battle of Chi Bi
4. The flight of Liu Bei
* Liu Bei conquering Jing Zhou and later Yi province
* Cao Cao absorbing the northwestern regions
* Fight for Han Zhong
5. Three kingdoms
* Shu, Wei and Wu
* The battle at He Fei: Wu vs Wei
* The death of Guan Yu and the battle og Yi Ling
* The death of Cao Cao and Liu Bei
* The real fall of the Han
6. Zhuge Liang, the sleeping dragon
* Southern expedition: Nanman champaign
* Northern expedition
* Wu under pressure
* The battle of Wu Zhang plain and the death of Zhuge Liang
7. The end of the Three Kingdoms
* Fall of Shu
* Fall of Wei and rise of Jin
* Fall of Wu
* Unification

Here's the list of the major battle and the blodiest China's war:

* Battle of Jieqiao (191)
* Battle of Guandu (200)
* Battle of Red Cliffs (208)
* Battle of Hefei (217)
* Battle of Fancheng (219)
* Battle of Yiling (223)
* Zhuge Liang's Southern Campaign (225-230)
* Northern Expeditions (228-234)
* Battle of Jieting
* Battle of Wuzhang Plains (234)

Modern-day adaptations

China Central Television produced a lengthy television series by the name Romance of the Three Kingdoms in 1995.

Video games based on the Three Kingdoms romance include the Dynasty Warriors series, the Romance of the Three Kingdoms series, the Dynasty Tactics series, and the second game in the Kessen series. All of these are made by the Japanese company Koei.

The card game Magic: The Gathering has an expansion called Portal: Three Kingdoms that references famous battles and people from the Three Kingdoms romance.

In the Romance of The Three Kingdoms story, there are so many figures/individuals who's story is legend and won't be forgotten through ages.

The most favourites are:

* Dong Zhuo, the terror
* Lu Bu, the mightiest hero ever
* Cao Cao, the hero of chaos
* Zhang Liao, the general of He Fei
* Xiahou Dun, the one-eye general
* Zhang Jiao, the way of peace
* Yuan Shao, the indecisive noble
* Liu Bei, the man of virtue
* Guan Yu, the god of war

The Legend of ZHAO YUN

Full Name: Zhao Yun Zilong
Life Span: 61 years (AD +-168 - 228)
Brother: Zhao Lei (sworn brother)
Sons: Zhao Tong(209), Zhao Guang(210)
Warlords Served: Gongsun Zan, Liu Bei, Liu Chan
Officers Killed: Qu Yi, Gao Lan, Zhang Wu, Lu Kuang, Chunyu Dao, Yan Ming, Xing Daorong, Xiahou En, Zhu Ran
Cause of Death: Old age.

The longest surviving of the five tiger generals of the Shu Kingdom, Zhao Yun originally served under the warlord Gongsun Zan but abandoned him after finding him to be a warlord who fights for his own gains and didn't bother about suffering of the general populace. He joined up with Liu Bei when Liu Bei was escaping from Yuan Shao's camp.

Calm and level-headed, he was assigned as escort for Liu Bei on functions and trips. He is best remembered for his courageous breakout at Changban slope from the encirclement of the Cao army to rescue Liu Bei's new born child Liu Chan to safety. Aside from Guan Yu and Zhang Fei, Zhao Yun is the most seasoned and experienced general and Liu Bei relied upon him on practically every battle up till he became the King of Hanzhong.

Zhuge Liang was relieved when he managed to intercept Lady Sun's boat and together with Zhang Fei brought back Liu Chan thus avoiding a blackmail from the Wu Kingdom to use Liu Bei's son to exchange for the territories of Jingzhou.

When Liu Bei breathed his last, he entrusted Zhao Yun to look after his sons. The death of Guan Yu was quickly followed up by Zhang Fei and Huang Zhong leaving only two tiger generals alive after the death of Liu Bei thus Zhao Yun is highly valued to the Shu Kingdom. During the suppression of the southern rebellion by Meng Huo, Zhuge Liang brought him and Wei Yan along as senior officers. With the south pacified, the plans for the invasion of Wei proceeded and though by that time Zhao Yun is very old, he is still a fearsome warrior on the battlefield despite his age.

Zhuge Liang was greatly saddened when Zhao Yun's sons Zhao Tong and Zhao Guang went to Chengdu to report the death of their father.

Zhao Yun, as he appears in Dynasty Warriors

Zhao Yun has been the central character in all of the Dynasty Warriors video games. He is usually in a prominent position on the manual/cover of the game (no small feat when sharing space with 40+ other warriors) and is most often the character used by the Koei developers in screenshots of upcoming titles. Zhao is usually labelled as a "beginner's" character -- both due to his having no overt strong or weak stat areas and the wide, easy swings of his weapon. He is also one of the few playable officers that can be played from a fresh saved game (most have to be unlocked by completing certain requirements). His weapon is called the Dragon Spear, and features a good balance between crowd-clearing regular attacks and a single-enemy-targeted musou (special) attack. In this, he spins his spear repeatedly out in front, juggling an opponent for heavy damage. He is The main pick for any under level Warriors.

My questions are:

1. Which is the most fav part of the Romance of The Three Kingdoms that you like?
2. Which side do you prefer to win? Shu, Wei or Wu?
3. Who's your fav character?
4. Which game from the Romance of The Three Kingdoms that you like the most?

AditZ' answer:

1. The battle of Chang Ban: Zhaon Yun's great raid through enemy lines single-handedly while saving Lui Bei's baby.
2. Shu!
3. Zhao Yun, of course!
4. Dynasty Warriors series and its tactic.

hey hahaha, Romance of the 3 kingdoms is one of my favourite novels too, just a place below Journey to the West.

and to answer your questions aditz

1. Which is the most fav part of the Romance of The Three Kingdoms that you like?

The Battle of Chi Bi. How could you not include that in? XD XD. The great sea fire battle, with Shu and Wu fighting against Wei.

2. Which side do you prefer to win? Shu, Wei or Wu?

Hmm... i'd say neither. Because all 3 kingdoms have their own unique points.

3. Who's your fav character?

It would have to be Zhao Yun, although Zhou Yu is a place behind him XD

4. Which game from the Romance of The Three Kingdoms that you like the most?

DW without a doubt

Ow, you share about the same fav character and game series like me.

Yea, the battle at Chi Bi is one no doubt greatest battle in three kingdoms era. Cao Cao never predicted that his 1 million force will be defeated by a relatively smaller force. Fire attack was the strategy that both Zhuge Liang and Zhou Yu came up to.

I like the event when Huang Gai pretended to defect from Wu, by Zhou Yu's plot to fooled the Wei spies. He was beaten badly. :P Then he played a great part in starting the fire attack with the wind that Zhuge Liang predicted. Too bad this old warrior was shot down by Zhang Liao's arrow.

Yea, its country has its own unique. But I never like Cao Cao for his smart yet treacherous cunning. Liu Bei far better than him. He's a man of virtue who only fought for the people. Too bad he lost his vituosness after the death of Guan Yu. If only he didn't attack Wu after Guan Yu's death. The unification maybe belongs to Shu and the restoration of the Han empire....

Other side of the game, its also nice to use Lu Bu. So very easy to beat the enemy generals. :P

1. Which is the most fav part of the Romance of The Three Kingdoms that you like?
Three Heroes Swear Brotherhood In The Peach Garden

2. Which side do you prefer to win? Shu, Wei or Wu?
I had to vote for Wei, for it control most of the land and far more usefull Scholars
If there is no Shu and Wu, with Cao Cao the pace should come much sooner.

3. Who's your fav character?
Lu Bu, I don't think he is dum and stuff. It like how can you be dum to never lose battle (except later when everyone turn against him)
Actually, I like Guan Yu:p

4. Which game from the Romance of The Three Kingdoms that you like the most?
I like the PC games series, good thing is I can play any character now.
I also like Dynasty Warriors because I can feel how they 1 vs 1000s

AditZ - July 30, 2006 03:25 PM (GMT)
Yea, he did well in battle and his strength was unpararelled. It was even said "Among men Lu Bu, among horses Red Hare..." I think the key of his victories in battle is his advisor/strategist, Chen Gong who has smart brain. But when it comes to selfishness, he's waaaayyy to greedy and arrogant. In the end, those attitude led him to his own demised. Even Chen Gong's advice was denied. Chen Gong himself admited that Lu Bu was stupid. :blink:

Can't deny the history that said he betrayed 2 times of his own master and step-father. Muscle - Attitude = Lu Bu

The most sadden story in the three kingdoms was the death of Guan Yu. Damn Lu Xun and Lu Meng for this.....

Yeah I heard it was great! Maybe I should start reading it.

also another one of my favourite moments is the battle of Hu Lao Gate. Lu Bu fighting the 3 brothers on horseback by himself!

AditZ - August 6, 2006 04:46 PM (GMT)
Yea, thats one good fight. But thats the reason why Lu Bu failed to guard Hu-Lao gate. The three brothers finally drove him back. :)

Still, to face those three (Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei) and managed to equalize was a great might!

OMG that reminds me of Dynasty Warriors 4 extreme legends when I tried getting Lu Bu's 11th weapon! It took me so long to kill 3000 (i think) soldiers and i almost ran out of time! good thing my dad was a decoy when he played...

Yes as funny as it sounds my dad plays dynasty warriors as well and he's actually pretty good at it lol! :lol:
