Shiina Ringo is a famous Japanese musician, most recognizable for her famously nasal voice. She debuted in 1998, and released four solo albums before creating the band, Tokyo Jihen. Each album she releases is strikingly different from the one before, with many new ideas and styles of music.

Shiina Ringo (椎名林檎)

Shiina Ringo, born Shiina Yumiko (椎名裕美子), first appeared on the Japanese music scene in 1998 with her debut single Koufukuron. A debut album followed in 1999, gaining much praise from critics throughout Asia. Her second album, met greater success in terms of sales, and was showered with much success and fame. Shiina's third album, Kalk Samen Kuri no Hana, affectionately known as 'KZK' or 'KSK' to her fans, recieved the most feedback from critics across the music industry. Many people claim this album was the "masterpeice" of Shiina's music career, and thus, success was phenomenal.

Shiina's music ranges from heavy guitar-screeching rock to traditional Japanese music with a jazzy twist to bluesy melodic pop, making her somewhat difficult to place, but more than entertaining to listen to. Unlike other popstars, she prefers to keep her private life away from public scrutiny, avoiding such things as publicity stunts. She uses this veil above her private life to instill an air of mystery about her to the media.

Shiina is unique among the music industry because of several traits. One being her distinctive nasal voice, which has a powerful and full range. Another, her trademark mole, was removed at the end of her solo career when she became part of Tokyo Jihen (most likely as either for a medical reason or to symbolise the end of her solo career). Shiina is known for doing her own thing, and is also known for her distinctive PV's. For example, in Honnou, Shiina is portrayed as a promiscuous nurse who kicks down glass panes with her high-heels and frolics with a sick-looking female patient.

Shiina's Past
user posted image
Shiina dressed up as a provocative, glass smashing nurse in Honnou.Shiina was raised in a family of musicians, and studied piano, music and ballet at an early age. She was once asked to compose a song for her school play. Her skill at song writing has remained throughout her career, where she writes all of her own songs, with the exception of occasionally covering other artists. Shiina Ringo has written songs for artists such as Hirosue Ryoko and Tomosaka Rie.

From a young age, Shiina always tried to paint a dark beauty spot above her mouth to look more appealing and unique. Because she repeated doing this so much, a real mole appeared on the spot. This may have been caused by a "tattoo" effect of whatever she was using. The "Ringo" (apple in Japanese) in her name is a reference to her younger days where her face would turn red like an apple in front of people. By the time Shiina was 15, she was a member in several bands, and ocasionally performed by herself to clubs. By 16, she was the lead vocalist in a band called "Marvelous Marble" (an all girls band backed by Tsuda Yukiko [guitar], Nakagawa Ai [Bass], Matsue Izumi [Keyboard] and Tokitsu Rino [Drums]) who entered the 9th Yamaha Teens' Music Festival in 1995. They sung a cover of Danielle Brisebois's Just Missed the Train on national television. At Japan's 5th Annual Music Quest Competition, she also performed a song solo that would later become one of her singles, Koko de Kiss Shite.. This won her an award for excellence.

Shiina Facts

In 1997, Shiina travelled to the UK for a short period. Her time there deepened her understanding of Western culture and the English language, and surely had an effect on her own style of music.
In 2002, Shiina married Yayoshi Junji, a guitarist, and had a child. They divorced 14 months later. In this period, Shiina took a break from making music to focus on her child. This period was soon broken with her famous cover album, Utaite Myoli ~Vol. I~.
Since Shiina's style is so vastly different (ranging from Jazz, to Pop, to Rock, to Enka) she has made a new genre for herself, which she calls "Shinjuku-kei". This translates to "The style of Shinjuku" (the business distict of Tokyo), and is a reference in the adaptive way that Japanese businessmen are portrayed.

Shiina's trademark symbol.Shiina's trademark symbol is the Kronekodow. The romanji form is Kuronekodou (黒猫堂), meaning "The Magnificent Black Cat".
Shiina has a brother, Shiina Junpei, who is a famous soul singer in Japan. They worked together and released three duets: Tamanegi no Happy Song (it was a cover of Marvin Gaye's The Onion Song), which appears on Shiina's cover album, Utaite Myoli ~Vol. I~, as well as Junpei's album Rhodes to Freedom; WHERE IS THE LOVE (it is a cover of Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway's song under the same name), which was released both as a single and in Junpei's album discover; and Georgy Porgy released under the name yokoshima(邪) (basically consists of Ringo and her brother) as a limited one time online release.
Shiina's mother, Shiina Akiko, is a ballet-dancer and her father, Shiina Koutaro, works at a gas company.
Shiina has covered a lot of songs during her career. For a full list, see Shiina Ringo Covers.

Tokyo Jihen (東京事変)

Tokyo Jihen (2004)
Tokyo Jihen (2005)In 2004, Shiina Ringo formed a band called Tokyo Jihen, although speculation arose that this was the usual Shiina Ringo, in everything but name. However, with each new single and album, Tokyo Jihen proved to have a very different sound than Shiina, combining rock, jazz and pop influences to make the style of Tokyo Jihen. This band was first introduced in Shiina's Sugoroku Ecstasy tour. You can watch them perform in Shiina's Electric Mole DVD.

As of July 2005, keyboardist Hiizami Masayuki, and guitarist Hirama Mikio have left Tokyo Jihen. Two new members, keyboardist Izawa Ichiyou and guitarist Ukigumo, were announced in mid September of 2005, and thus, the band's musicians changed with their new members.

-----------------------------------

My thoughts...

The reasons i love Shiina Ringo and suggesting everyone to listen to her.. is that...

she has a very unique way of singing... her voice and way of singing is very nasally... in such a way that it kinda becomes annoying... but if you keep on listening you really get into her music!

The style of Shiina Ringo's music, is very Rockish, Gothic, Punkish, and some very Jazzy.... kinda like a japanese girl version of My Chemical Romance...

Now brace yourselves....

In my opinion I believe that Shiina Ringo is the complete opposite of YUI... WAIT!!! dont X out ur screens yet...

when i say opposites, i only mean in style...

In the style of Japanese music..

I believe that Shiina Ringo is the Yin While YUI is the Yang

even thought theyre different they are also very similar....

I met YUI and Shiina Ringo about the same time but stuck closer to YUI.. but now im also in love with Shiina Ringo...

Differences

Shiina Ringos music is kinda dark, makes you feel like "damn I can take over the world!" while YUIs music makes you feel like "damn I can make it in life!"

YUI prefers to play more Acoustic guitar... and Shiina mainly plays Electric..

Shiina has a lot of different looks and hair styles while YUI sticks to her strait hair, t shirt and jeans..

YUI still remains solo while Shiina has recently formed a band

Similarities

Both are born in Fukuoka..

Both grew up in a music background...

Both kick ass live... i hate it when singers have great cds but suck live...

user posted image

If you closely to listen to YUI she drags her notes whenever she holds a note.. VERY HOT

Shiina does the same thing, at every end note while fading from the it she lets her voice shake and trip a lil VERY SEXY... she also RRrrrRRRRrrrolls her Rs ^_^ also hot...

Even though Shiina is... well Shiina she is very shy... like YUI..
She even recieved the Nickname Ringo in grade school when she was trying to make a speech infront of the class but couldnt say a word only turning bright red earning her name Ringo (Apple)

Another fact about her is that she loves Ayaya, they are even close friends

Lastly both YUI and Shiina are great singers and have great styles of music...

NOW... heres some Vids of Shiina!

Shiina Ringo - Meisai
This is a very good video of her... and its the first one i saw of hers.. again it has the jazzy style i mentioned.. and shes very very sexy!!

Shiina Ringo - Yamini Furu Ame
very koo vid of hers.. shes super hot bc she looks like Misa From Deathnote!

Shiina Ringo - Gibusu
This Video is very different from her others.. its more simple.. it really shows her true beauty... the song really gets good in the middle when shes starts playing her guitar.. ^_^

Shiina Ringo - Tsumiki Asobi
This is one of her Lives... this song proves that she can still kick ass live!! its very good plus she very sexy with her curly hair and dotted dress.. the lyrics are also very good... she likes to play with her words in her songs... very creative..

Shiina Ringo - Ringo no Uta
This is her final MV of her solo career... In this MV she dresses in every dress she ever dressed in her other MVs ^_^;;; if that makes sense... this version is very nice and has a good tango feeling to it..

Tokyo Jihen - Ringo no Uta
BUT this is the vid i fell in love of her with! The rock version is very upbeat and kick ass... She sings this version with her band Tokyo Jihen...the hottest part is in the middle of the vid she goes like "Guitar" and the guitar solo begins... SOooooo Hot!!!!

Shiina Being Cute ^_^

Shiina Being Cute ^_^ again
Some may find it kinda annoy.. but i certainly find it cute!! ^_^

NOW I SPENT A HUGE AMOUNT OF TIME TYPING THIS!!!

so i want some feedback!! good or bad!!

and dont jugde untill you listen to atleast 2 of her songs ^_^

i hope u will enjoy her as much as i do!

hey i learned of her from you in your youtube fav's shes now one of my favs too! :guitar her music is really great almost orchestrated all for her ya? lol thats soooo much text you've given, and i just briefly looked. i'll finish it when im in a reading mode. lol is Tokyo Jihen any good? i know shes magnificent on her own... but i still havent heard any of T.J. go Shiina!

edit: oh and if shes not as great in T.J. how sad, but its not the end end of her solo career is it? i wonder.

edit.edit: so i finished reading it and i totally understand what you mean when they are opposite in style, yin and yang indeed! I should hear some Tokyo Jihen since the band is started by her, herself... cant be worse than what shes given with her solo career huh?

aricebox - June 20, 2006 02:17 PM (GMT)
ohhh both YUI and Shiina were born in Fukuoka~
but then. i might be wrong but when you said both YUI and Shiina grew up in a music background. what do you mean by that? In YUI's story, all she talks about is her mom always listening to music and stuff. i dont really think thats considered as growing up in a music background~ unless i missed something :(

br4d137 - June 21, 2006 07:30 AM (GMT)
Hmmm i read her Wiki info and it said ..and i quote...

"YUI began writing poems in ninth grade. At the age of 16, by recommendation of a friend, she began studying song, songwriting, and guitar at a private music school in her native Fukuoka. Aspiring to become professional, she carried her guitar around and sang at local places such as the seashore of Shingu and in the middle of the rice fields of Kaminofu"

- Wiki

the wiki is writen by a person on this forum... his sn is Ifrit

im not 100% sure if she really went to a private music school... my bad if im wrong... ^_^

hope u still like shiina ringo tho! ^_^

Shiina Ringo!!! I love her as well!

I know some people think that her vocal is annoying and I myself sometime find her vocal to be annoying as well, but her music is definitely amazing!

And I like her band too! Tokyo Jihen is great! Too bad two of their members leave (HZM and Hirama, they're so great!!!) They got replaced by two other still good musician, and I still like Tokyo Jihen now, however I can't find Tokyo Jihen to be the way they used to (Compare Toumei Ningen on Dynamite concert and on Adult album, Toumei Ningen on Dynamite Concert is wayyyy better >_<)

Oh yeah, nice intro for this thread, br4d137!

br4d137 - June 22, 2006 02:08 PM (GMT)
Ooo yah... i know... U mean the one where she sung the Dynamite song right??

God she was sexy!

Tokyo Jihen - Dynamite [live]

her dance was really cute and i love how she sings songs from the 1950s ^_^ Kinda like Chicago...

I had always dreamed that YUI, Ringo, and Hikki are all BFF ^_^

that would be hot!!

what if they have like coffee every weekend or something.. then goes out and chill together? thats a lil senerio i play in my head every night ^_^

For_the_Ears - July 12, 2006 09:18 PM (GMT)

If you havent seen the "Just Can't Help It" DVD and you like/love Shiina Ringo and Tokyo Jihen, you are MISSING OUT *PERIOD!* its really great! the whole group seems more involved compared to dynamite out. and sure its missing HZM and the former guitarist but its still rocks my socks. The beginning honestly wasnt the high of the show... but it just didnt stop getting better! and at the end there was a train theme and it really reminded me of YUI... the theme, that is... I wonder if they were doing a tribute of some sort. grab it off jpopsuki now! oh and the sound is dubbed a bit off but it didnt get me all
" :weirdpc" and i still liked it alot. so yes. go now. get it!

edit: sorry for double post... look how long ago it was though!

editedit: forgot to mention she wears like 7 different gettups throughout the show :D just a fun fact. :swt

For_the_Ears - October 13, 2006 05:50 AM (GMT)
not too sure... my estimate is maybe in the $30 - 40 range. i know there are some clips posted on youtube. but ive been noticing them being taken down too... >< :( i remember seeing "mirrorball." "shojou robot," "service (which looked like so much fun - i wish i was on stage with them! :D)," and a couple more... if you dont mind there being a bit of a dub timing problem you may as well jpopsuki it.

br4d137 - October 14, 2006 07:32 AM (GMT)
service done live is my fav performance!!

man... if i went to a concert and the singer can give me that much fun and quality of a show... i will buy the tickets at any cost!!
